Foregoing the discussions about whether inboard camera's can or cannot be be activated during off duty hours.....
When you're piloting this thing down the road, how much of a distraction is it to know that somebody in an office is watching you like a hawk and monitoring every little detail of your driving ? Does it have a tendancy to focus your attention on what you might be scolded for next instead of actually paying attention to traffic ?
It's tough enough in passenger vehicles to navigate unfamiliar metropolitan areas in heavy traffic.....having to pay close attention to a GPS and road signage just to make sure you're in the correct lane....all while watching traffic. It has to be exponentially tougher in a big rig.
My wife does not passenger well. When she gets on a roll, she just can't help herself. "Why don't you get around this guy ?" "Do you have your headlights on ?" "The speed limit is only 65." "Why aren't your wipers going faster ?" "Why are you in this lane ?" ....I swear all those questions would roll off her tongue machine gun style in 30 seconds or less.. When her mouth gets in gear I often find myself paying more attention to what she might ##### about next as opposed to being focused on traffic. Try as I may to concentrate on driving, she will demand my attention over and over again by badgering me with question after question after question after question. I could probably put an end to it forever if just once I just put her out on the side of the road and left her......
When you know you're being watched, the audio is being eavesdropped on, or lane departure warnings and such go off and any little mistake could cost you, do any of you experience a similar phenomenon of finding it difficult to keep your mnd uncluttered and in the zone ?
How big of a distraction are the driver facing cameras and warning systems ?

There is nobody watching you. The camera only activates if you slam on the brakes. It then sends 20 seconds of your driving to your safety dept. if you were texting you will get fired. Otherwise nobody cares what you are doing.
austinmike Thanks this. -
Wouldn't distract me one bit,,,because neither would be in any truck I would ever drive again. Here's what they'd see if a camera was facing me,,
austinmike, fargonaz, tinytim and 6 others Thank this. -
I used to sing to mine. " Christine Sixteen " by KISS, and pick my nose at it all the time, cause it will activate on bumps and pot holes and such.
And when your anti collision sensors pick up an overpass and slam on the brakes, yea it sucks.
Don't have any of that garbage now, but a camera facing out isn't a bad idea.augiedoggie41, fargonaz and snowman_w900 Thank this. -
And you do not talk about the joys of having a camera of your own watching ahead of you? You should have one.
As far as the technology, I prefer it to be quiet. A number of times when I activated the ABS in the rain, ice or whatever, that tractor will say so and there is a light on the left rear of the trailer which helps in eyeballing the thing to see if she will slide.
I drive cars at least a generation older so that there is very little technology in them. Tahoe has some, but it's all me. And if that fails, it's generally known in the insurance world as a crusher not a crushee. -
Mine randomly records every 15 minutes or so for about 15 seconds. An upload light will turn green everytime it does it. So I'll wait for it to come on then off so I can Pp in my bottle rolling down the road real quick. Also I use headphones when watching P or n. They say the audio recorder cuts off when u set the brakes but I ain't buyin it.

If my wife badgered me like you say yours does, she wouldn't be in my truck any longer.
As for inward facing cameras being a distraction, if your constantly setting it off, then you might want to look at your skills as the driver. I had one at p&s, I'd set mine off about once a week, usually when I'd hit a crater at a truck stop or a shipper/reciever. -
My company truck is new but has minimal gadgetry. Has e log but that's about it. I have an old gps that I keep stowed away for emergencies. I don't get the people that drive around with the dash and windshield covered in gadgets. Some guys can't even drive down the road to the nearest truck stop without programming three or four different gadgets. -
