How are O/O making a living at $1.00 a mile

    Remember when southwest airlines had dirt cheap prices. They were hedging the price of fuel with contracts. How do we know megas don t do the same thing?

    You wrote that was what the guys who lease for them told you. In other words, that great fuel savings is being passed onto them and justifies $1.00 per mile? At least that's how I read what you wrote.

    There is no way megas are buying fuel for $1.00 per gallon right now, no way.

    the megas buy fuel on a cost plus basis. They get fuel for about a nickel over what the truckstop pays for it. Truckstops don't even get it for $1 a gallon.

    Hope I don't sound condescending but I wouldn't say it's a secret. And I wouldn't call myself a success at this point. It's only been a few weeks and I happen to jump in when brokered freight has been doing really good. I personally think there is room for improvement. And I have a long way to go before I have paid myself back for the truck and recouped my entire life savings.

    That being said I did research and found a carrier who values drivers, values partners, owner operators and fleet owners for what they are and have also had sucess. It is a small to medium sized carrier and the person helping me dispatch has a ton of experience and good relations with brokers. At this stage I am just having him send me wherever he thinks we can do the best. This is allowIng me to get used to the road,(a week at a time) and learn how he works things.

    You all should ask the leasors what they're paying. I don't see em anymore so I have no idea these days.

    England leasors truck numbers start with 9. Ask JCT also. They ALL leasors.

    I don't need to. I worked inside a pretty decent size trucking company. The lessors received the whole discounted rate for fuel. It was cost plus a few extra cents as was already alluded to.

    The negotiated discount rate is usually around .50 to .60 off of the posted retail ppg.

    It's the only way I can see it working. I'm like the rest of you all. There's no way to make money at their cheap mile rate. There's gotta be a secret somewhere or they'd all be quitting after the first week. Cuz THEIR monthly payout for all bills is really high.
