I'm trying to determine what the start up costs are going to be to run my own authority. I pretty much got everything all sorted out except for the apportioned plate fee for the first year. I looked on the website in my state, PA, of course the one with highest reg fees!!! But it said for the first year your charged for the whole 59 locations that reciprocate. Anyone know how much this costs or how to figure out a ball park number? Thanks
trying to calculate start up costs!!!

whoopNride and 77fib77 Thank this. -
holly cow accidental trucker. you must be running a lot of miles in some expensive states.
-
Maintainance fund is about $15k
You will also need reserves to pay the bills, three months operating expenses at least that much.redoctober83, 77fib77 and TallJoe Thank this. -
I've been toying with getting my own authority this week too.
Carrier I wanted to get leased on needs me to wait 6 more months (min 1.5yr cdl). They charge $75/wk for IRP plates = $3,600/yr AS compared to getting plates myself for $1,600/yr @ DMV.
The savings, I suppose are coming from BOBTAIL insurance, which they charge $50/month ($600/yr) whereas I'll have to pony up $2200 upfront or $2600 armortized over 12 months.
Heck, it sucks that I cant even do test runs with my truck, coz im not legal to be on the road, till plated.
I'm starting to wonder if I can put "NOT-FOR-HIRE" private plates in the mean-time and drive the big girl till time comes to get her leased out. She definitely needs a weekly run, just to keep them juices flowing.TallJoe Thanks this. -

I paid for my IRPA $2030 this year. My total mileage decreased though. I don't think I will go over 100K this year. So hopefully it will go down even lower. To get the authority the insurance is the most critical factor, sadly they often decide who is in and who is out. For me it was 3K down and another 3K down for the trailer (new). So I had to cough up 6 grand to get in. With 2-3 years of clean sheet the insurance can go down to even half of what it is when you start. And about 20K is needed too, if you don't want to use factoring.

My start up cost with a new truck and new authority came to less then 15,000.
