Certain transmissions have different gaps between them so you have to learn the speed between shifts. I have a 10 speed now that I never miss a gear or grind, and I have driven 18 speeds where I couldn't catch the last direct gear without a little grind 80 percent of the time.
I rarely push the truck past 1300 rpms until 8th or 9th gear and then it's 14-1459 at the most. You should be able to shift so smooth that the truck barely transfers weight or moves around instead of those morons you see making it buck or jump.
Any tips for learning to shift without clutch

My ole' KW has almost a million and a half on it. Trans still shifts just fine and I only use the clutch when stopping/taking off, and on rare occasions off road.
There is no substitute for practice. If your grinding, you still have work to do. Once you master it, you'll wonder why anyone would want to put all that stress on their clutch and throwout bearing, not to mention their knee. Lol.5UG, QuietStorm, rabbiporkchop and 2 others Thank this. -

OP, my first and most important word of advice is use your fingers for shifting. DON'T try to get your palm on the shifter and heavy hand it into gear. Using your finger tips on the shifter helps give you more feel, you can more gently nudge it toward the gear, and IF you aren't perfect the slight rattle off the end of the gear teeth won't hurt anything.
Second, concentrate on how little you need to move the throttle. I'm five years in on my most recent foray into trucking and I am still trying to precisely control my rpm's, sometimes I go for a week only double clutching, or a week with the Jake on, or otherwise break up my routine to continuously improve my craft. I first learned to drive by floating, then had to learn to double clutch to get my CDL again five years ago and put in two years with Swift to launch my trucking career 2.0
For those that say you have to double clutch or you will destroy the transmission, riddle me this:
Can you double clutch WITHOUT matching rpm's to the gear?
The answer of course is you can't. You have to be near perfect with the throttle whether you float or double clutch.Bob Dobalina, nax, BigBob410 and 4 others Thank this. -

You might become proficient in months, but true expertise will take years.
I thought I knew it all. Then started driving hundreds of different trucks over the last year, most far different than trucks I was used to driving. Then I started pulling a tanker here or there. Let me tell you, driving a fully loaded smooth bore tanker will give you an education in a hurry. One bad shift and that 24 ton gorilla in the tank wakes up and he's PISSED!5UG, QuietStorm and Zeviander Thank this. -
... you've damaged the transmission.5UG, Keithdabarber, aaronpeterbilt3787 and 7 others Thank this.
