I have heard that fmcsa is working to put eld on pre 99 trucks. it is technically posibble if truck has j1708 data bus ( from 95 and up all freigtliners have it plus some eld manufacturers alrady have devices to work with j1708 data bus). there are members here at this forum who drive pre 99 trucks with eld installed.

That doesn't address mechanical motors.

The whole reason they didn't include 1999 and older trucks is because the ECM is too primitive on those to get the information they want for the ELD.... Of course they want to see those trucks just retire, they are figuring on them just wearing out...LOL
When that doesn't happen they will come back with something to bring those trucks into being tracked like everyone else, that's their modus operandi....Probably within a year or two as they watch a cottage industry spring up around rebuilding older trucks to avoid the mandate..mhyn Thanks this. -
I'm in mid Missouri and the rumor here was 1999 or older would be exempt.... But we have more than 1 truckstop here and a truck wash so the rumors are usually a Lil better... Lol

I know of a 89 kw cabover with a eobr even though it has a mechanical cummins .. it just uses gps and a few different sensors .. I know it's not a eld but it's not far off
