Hi everyone, I've been debating on obtaining my CDL for a few weeks now. I've been studying for test and trying to figure out how to do this.
I personally don't want to do OTR . I'd rather do local or dedicated route . I just don't want to be out 10-14 days . I have two young kids and don't want to be away that long .
All the schools I've contacted have told me companies will only hire for Otr ,but I can change after 1 year . That's to long .
I've searched Craigslist and indeed for jobs and all say minimum 6 mouths , 1 yr or 2 yrs of experience. How do I find a company that is willing to train outside of those searches?
I've also found an add from a guy who will train me to get CDL for &1500 . Even if I went this route , according to my searches I wouldn't be able to find work due to lack of experience.
I wouldn't blame to an extent cause more then likely i wouldn't be ready to handle all the manuvers with the trailer.
Hoping for your expertise to guild me into my new future.
The only experience I have is I've driven a 16" step van for 8 years and a 23" box truck with over 700k miles
Thank you

Walk into a regional company office. Tell them about yourself, your work ethic, and abilities.
If you can sell your attitude, they may bend the ‘rules’ and hire you.
Being hired for a home-daily company without experience can happen - I know that personally.
Walk in the office, and talk with the terminal manager.
Appearance and how you interact with people are important, but...if you don’t want to go OTR, then give it a shot.
Also, @Chinatown for more specific companies to check with. -

Trucking terminals and larger warehouses have "Yard Jockey" positions. No CDL is required while operating on Private Property. These positions pay by the hour and will easily lead into the driving position you desire. Good luck!

In Texas, foodservice is one of the types of driving that don't require OTR. Labatt Foodservice doesn't even require a CDL, only a CDL permit and they only have routes in Texas and New Mexico.luckystar, Dan.S and BIGLEFTYINTX Thank this. -
