I'm trying to hit the ground running but I don't want to burn out. Any suggestions for a student driver? Haven't even taken my first class yet but recently signed up. Such a newb but ready for a change. I want to earn at least 55-60k. o_O

I just gave someone this same advice. Google trucking companies in your area and start making calls. I would try to find a mom and pop outfit before I went with a mega carrier. Congratulations and good luck. I'm quite sure you'll do well. Just remember the first year can be tough.

South Bend; couple dozen companies to choose from; flatbed, vans, refrigerated?
South Bend is an excellent location; plenty to choose from. You can submit applications right now; don't have to wait. You will receive job offers contingent on successfully completing cdl school.
Van Eerden - notice the ad has 1 yr. "preferred"; does not have "required" for foodservice division.

I started driving back in beginning of May. First few weeks were with trainer and some low miles solo to start out so I calculate my earnings so far starting in June and on Pace to surpase that potential over the first 12 months.

Depending on what company, pay rate, trips and requested home times, 55-60k can easily be done.

.39 a mile x 3000 miles a week x 52 weeks = $60,840. Plus figure more or less on detention pay, layovers, east coast trips, fuel and safety bonus, spending habits... It can be done.

Granted, I haven't been home much this summer and the wife and kids are missing me, but I told them I was going to push as hard as I could to gain as much experience I could and pay off bills.

Don't know what your home style is like but a good suggestion that I could give is that when you get your dispatcher, just ask to be home one weekend a month for 3 days but otherwise to keep you busy. You'll get you miles/experience, you'll keep your dispatcher happy cause you are making him money with the loads, making a good impression on the boss... But yet that 3 days at home will keep you sane.

    But everyone is different
