My friend is taking a break from dry van as a owner operator for last 15 years.
He is interested in hauling cars with a pickup truck with a 4 car trailer.

Can anyone recommend a 4 car trailer with double wheels and 2 axles on the trailer ?

here is a picture of what he is looking for ....he lives in the north east by nj/ny

Its a little more than 4, but I see alot of these double deckers and talked with a few and they were happy with it.
Just throwing it out there for an idea, not quite what you specify, but as I say its an idea, can still haul your 4, they are out of the Carolinas

After talking with a guy who ran a pickup and 3 car trailer , I don't see the point. He had been inspected over 40 times this year already and asked how often I got inspected. When I said maybe once or twice a year he looked like he wanted to cry. He said he works legally and pays taxes but doesn't understand why they constantly harass him.

I think it's because a quite a few of the hotshot car haulers like to cut corners on a few things and, as a result, make easy picking for the DOT.

For example, there's that thing I constantly harp on in this forum: a lot of the pickups people are using don't quite have the correct axle rating for that sort of application, and exceeding your axle rating is a OOS- type violation. On several occasions I have actually seen operators pulled over for this exact reason. It must not be common knowledge because I see people do it all the time.

There's also the issue of brakes. Too many haulers are pulling 4 and 5 car configurations but never bothered to beef up the brakes on their power units. Bad idea, for what should be pretty obvious reasons. A pickup hauling that much weight on such a consistent basis is going to kill some brakes in a hurry.

Finally, too many of the hotshot car haulers aren't as familiar as they should be with certain regs. I've seen guys here get slapped with tickets for improperly-secured vehicle loads, not keeping logs, even not having CDL's (and various other offenses). It's as if some of those guys think that, since they're not driving a class 8 tractor, most of those USDOT regs don't apply to them. A good number of rollback wrecker drivers seem to fall for that same line of thinking as well. In all cases, one quick roadside inspection is all it takes for an operator to see the light.
