Too many truckers these days. How can it be a viable career?

Your absolutely right a lot more trucks on the roads that's for sure so one has to ask why are the powers that be not keeping up with the demand for more truck parking at rest stops and Truck stops in large cities like LA?

I don't know if you are here in Virginia, but at one time the rest areas were rebuilt to take on more truck parking among other benefits. Ohio rebuilt their rest areas including the same plus showers and coffee shops etc. (Now those showers, the last one was considered a biohazard with blood on the floor....)

Any way it did not take long for those new places to fillup. You would need millions of new parking and frankly I don't think there is a political will or desire to build that much.

How many years did it take you to realize this ? I bet you was warned and didn’t believe it. You had to find out the hard way, “on your own”.

In the later 90s I remember phone cards and waiting lines at the phone booths. Almost so fights in phone line. But I was just a passenger.

Parking was getting thin near any metropolitan area back in the early '90's. Doubt much at all has been added from what I read in threads, only a increased amount of traffic.

Two things, all the stuff from China and the national chains. Without intermodal it would make no sense to ship all that stuff into warehouses and back out. With national chains it's the same crap everywhere. There is no such thing as sourcing locally. I don't know there's actually all that many more trucks on the road as much as they're going further. Parked at all them stores it isn't as noticeable as rolling down the road.

What changed particularly in the 90s is walmart. One particular thing was no more trainloads, no tracks into those places. All just in time. They were lean and mean, pushed back on suppliers and everyone followed suit. Then they started buying everything from China.

There are not too many 'Truckers' there are too many "steering wheel holders" that have ruined the reputation of the trucker that I as an "old timer" used to enjoy and be proud of. While I am still proud of my profession, I have come to the conclusion that generations after me are not as strong and dependable as we the baby boomers were and still are. Each day I remind myself that it is illegal to kill stupid people. You can't fix stupid and it shouldn't be allowed to reproduce yet here we are. It seems that more and more of the "new drivers" have little to no common sense.
