A GPS wouldn't help there. That wasn't the wrong route but wrong driving. He should have split the turn and travel lane, taken both. Assuming he didn't see that until too late he should have pulled back in the travel lane and continued on. Counting the turn lane there's 3 lanes, the only reason to not be able to make that turn is failed to set up for it.

I just finished school and they taught us trip planning with an atlas. It wasn't in depth but an atlas is 99.9% accurate.
Never rely on a gps and dispatched route. Always confirm the dispatched route with the atlas.
I know the atlas is a pain in the ### but I'm sure it's a lot less of pain vs getting stuck down a road with no way out.
