I wouldn't drink it. I bought bonded stuff ashore and sneaked it onboard. Had some E-6 buddies that would stash it for me in their mess. Got along well with those guys since I was a hashmark E-3.

Us Deck Apes weren't so lucky, although I did manage to smuggle the odd pint or two of Jack aboard if the right Ensign or JG had the Quarterdeck watch.

I didn't have to worry about much either. My XO was a crusty old WO4 with a Purple Heart and a bunch of other stuff. In Hong Kong he came back to the ship pretty drunk, wearing sunglasses with plastic flowers on each side of the frames, and when the Lt. on the Quarterdeck admonished him, he threw the guy overboard. Nothing happened to him either because the CO really liked him and things were pretty loose in those days.

One time when it was time for the E-4 exam, there were 2 of us taking the test for the same rate and neither of us really wanted a promotion, but he insisted we both take the exam. He put the 2 of us in a room together with no one else in there and closed the door/hatch; then said, I'll be back in a couple of hours to check on you.

And that one topped it. Someday you and I are going to have to get together. The swapped stories about Olongapo alone should fill a long weekend...lol.

Those SEAL's didn't have the same grooming or uniform standards the rest of us had to comply with. I didn't care though; wouldn't have swapped places with them because I didn't have the discipline for that. Tough guys, for sure!

Yes sir, after striking out of Deck Division and going to Corpsman school in Great Lakes, I spent my first rotation at Coronado putting some Seal types and wanna bes back together. Those of the Trident were certainly cut from different cloth.

I saw them running on the beach at Coronado in training. Not for me!
Did you visit the Naval Hospital Balboa in San Diego?
