From what I've been reading on this forum and others, drivers need a couple years experience just to land a trucking job. Because there have been so many horror stories about CDL mills, I decided to pay for my own fare and go to a community college. But before doing that, and given the fact I have one misdemeanor theft conviction on my record from 25 years ago, would it even be feasible for me to consider this? In other words what are my chances I would get hired versus just throwing my money away?
My conviction did pass approval by one trucking company btw and I was told to study and get my permit before going to THEIR school at which point I thought hard about it and sent that recruiter an email saying I was going to go to a community college instead. Since that time, I haven't heard jack from him. I'm not going to mention the company name here, because it's not my intention to smear anyone but that said, this is a company that I'd read a lot of negative comments about which is the reason I decided to try another route in the first place.
Is it even possible to get a job if someone goes to their own CDL school?

Mention the company name. No smearing, you wasted your time on them. Now its time for them to face the truth. The truth is they want to sell schooling not hire drivers.
You are employable.
It is true most companies want to sell their schooling much more then they need drivers. With more time behind the wheel, you should get a better education at a community college and better chance of keeping a career. I assume that is what is important to you?
This time of year no one is hot to hire! No one! People that are getting hired only because they bought into some company school. Buy the time you make it through a community collage program in a few months, there will be more hiring. If you apply yourself you should have no problem getting on somewhere and your tuition reimbursed.Need4Speed Thanks this. -

The reason they offer in-house school and training is because it locks you into working for them at a cheap pay rate for a certain period of time. They end up making a lot more money at that cheap rate than what their school and training cost them. Get your CDL the way you're planning, then there are decent training companies like Magnum that will train a licensed but inexperienced driver.

The reason you haven't heard back is because he's a recruiter. They get paid to get bodies in the door if you're not getting in the door then it's a waste of time for him. I know it sounds like they don't care but some of these recruiters are commission based

Pay for your own schooling is the best way to get started . A certified school will look better on applications and best of all you wont be stuck in a cdl mills contract .

I went to a local Jr. College for my CDL school.
I had a great job, two weeks before graduation. We're in the hiring process right now. I should start about the 8th.
9 offers for jobs.
I think they understand when something is 25 years old. You've stayed clean all this time. Everybody makes mistakes.SplashDogs and SHOJim Thank this. -
Dozens of companies will hire you from a community college cdl school. Where is your location, so we can give you a few names of companies to apply with that hire new cdl school graduates.

If you got a CDL today. Looking for a guarantee for a job is like looking for a guarantee on a Toyota.
