It's going to be very cold. Maybe as cold as it will get in some time.

However the true polar cold hasnt come out of the arctic just yet. We are getting a taste of it and thats ok.

I recall some years ago in winters up there in the Dakotas and other areas where it really got cold. Something around -50 without factoring in the wind. Probably the one time we ran the engine on that century flat out at idle set 1500-1600 while fueling. Took a hour to fuel it. I guess we lost maybe 20 gallons just sitting there running the engine at cruise for a hour. The fueling was not really a problem that night, it was the necessity of going inside and warming up every 20 minutes. Spouse stayed in the truck. But I showed up with some damage on my skin which thankfully resolved itself. It's cold. But its really cold when it hurts the body.

I hate the cold but yesterday wasn't too bad cleaning the car and sitting in it while it warmed up because I had lots of winter clothing on.

Yea. We are not built for cold. Ours is under a slab building wide so that's not really a problem. It's the plastic that will fail.

Many homes in the south are built on blocks to be above flood waters and to allow the heat to go away in the hot summers. And those are the ones that will break pipes if they are not insulated properly. Our old home had wrapped pipes and a proper foundation wall to code. Even then we ran our water.

Some of the waterworks done to the old home was on purpose to bypass and build better defenses against winter cold. We remember what happened in the great ice storm of 2000. That was a lulu for us.

I don't recall pipes ever bursting here thank god.I am a safety nut though and more so since dad passed away.Have 5 smoke alarms which I'll be testing today.I'm getting a carbon monoxide detector next time I'm at Walmart or Menard's.I keep everything unpluged except what I'm using and check the furnace filter every so often.
