Doing ok in a historical hot market is probably not the bar to set.

What will you do when the market shifts back? Will you be able to make it when even the good negotiators like rollincoal are hardly ever getting 2 bucks a mile?

You've got to learn to negotiate cause these guys you think are being cool paying 2 bucks a mile today will be selling you those same loads at a buck twenty in the next downturn. Heck it won't even take a full recession, just a leveling off in the market like we saw in 2015.

    ChicagoJohn and Ruthless Thank this.

2015-2016 was a full blown freight recession. It was a lot more than a 'leveling off'. It happened because the spot market overheated in 2012-2014 and every idiot in the world decided the trucking business was the place to be.

I haven't been around long enough to really know how long a good cycle can last. I caught the tail end of the last good period (I was around for most of 2014) and then I survived the entire bad period as a broker/dispatcher. I'm expecting 2018 to be a lot like 2017 but minus the surprise. I doubt the peaks will be as high or the valleys as low.

That's the sense I'm getting as well. The economy is thrumming right now- there's a lot of freight coming down the pipe this year- I can hear it from my customers. It's going to be interesting to see how this all goes.

I disagree. Without looking up the actual numbers right now i can't be 100% certain of this but I'm pretty sure the economy flattened but didn't go in an actual recession in 15. Where as in 07/08 that was a true economic recession.

Keep in mind I'm not talking about one segment of the nation's economy, I'm talking about it as a whole.

Sure of course. And I'm not arguing that the whole economy slipped into recession. I'm strongly suggesting that if the entire economy was made up of trucking companies and people who depend on trucking companies to make a living 2015/2016 would qualify as a recession.

It's important to note that individual industries can drift quite a long way from what the general economy is doing. For instance right now retailers and hedge funds are absolutely getting clobbered. Like just laid to waste... Even though the economy as a whole is doing very well and trucking is doing VERY VERY well.
