Tmc has Texas dedicated runs, drivers average 50 to 55k their first full year. You literally run only Texas freight, drywall, Lowe's, home depot, lumber, pipe, coils to pipe yards, coiled rod, slinkies. They stay busy

    Everyone talks about pay.

Trucking is feast and famine. What you should consider the expenses being out there. If you ate breakfast it's probably 15 dollars, if you ate lunch another 15. Even if it's crappy fast food that burns off in 30 minutes and leaves you sleepy and lethargic. And dinner probably 20 dollars. All done 50 dollars spent today.

Times 7 days 350. Parking 10 dollars a day for the truck, call it 70 a week. Then you need more for tolls to be reimbursed, if your company does not have pike pass, prepass or some form of transponder. You will still need change to get out of the coin tills that dont use transponder. Then there is the lumper question. Showers. Laundry, supplies. Water, food for the truck, consumables for yourself. Never mind the smoking (That's 7.60 a pack, 10,00 in NYC, and god only knows how much else where... times 4 packs a day...)

See where I am going with this?

If you are going to do a few years for the "Experience" you are wasting time. If you are going to get out of the trucking and go home to do something else with your life then don't come out here. You will only be wasting time. If there is something else you wanna do with life and trucking isnt really it. then do that something you weaawy wanna do. Why wait 10 years? Tomorrow is not gauranteed.

There is also the potential threat of tickets. You will be liable for more than you realize out here. If you don't pay you either have gotten a lawyer and plan to 2000 miles to go attend court or you will have a warrant issued for your arrest. How are you gonna do this?

I can go overboard with more stuff. If you like vices like gambling, gaming, netflix etc etc etc etc then that's even more money. (Forget the casino, they can wipe you out in 15 minutes....)

And the hookers? Scammers, parasites? etc etc etc.

Sure you will make something. But you will spend it all joyfully this week until next week there is a major snafu in the computer you have no pay for a while. For us 9-11 was the ultimate. Destroyed the payroll and the people who keep it. Took 6 weeks before we got paid caught up and all. We had adequate savings. Never mind the renovations going on at home from storm damage that month. (12K for the storm repairs, cash and another 5K to 7K or so in savings burnt trucking. We got all that back and then some.)

    Anyhow....

Expenses. Hook onto a load. Little Rock to Detriot. via Memphis loading. 130 miles to Memphis and another 740 to detroit. Call it 870 miles. At ... .35 a mile... 304 dollars gross. Take away 45% taxes, withholding etc. 168.00 more or less (Usually less... if you are buying insurance and medical benefits etc)

Call it 150 for today and tomorrows work. 50 to savings and 25 dollars a day to eat. Keeping another 50 in reserve against real problems. Boom that's two days provided you are delivery ON TIME.

You will not know what will happen for the rest of the week in Detriot after you get empty. You will know in good time what you will do then. Whatver that load pays you figure the gross, deductions, savings and a little bit for your eating and put aside more against real problems.

Real problems might be wife at home abusing you on the phone where is the money? Wire her the 50 and tell her that's all until you get loaded again and paid. And eat chili on the 25.

Or another real problem might be that parking ticket you incurred. It's 70 dollars to pay within 10 days.....

Anyone that spends 50 bucks a day eating and smoking 4 packs needs to reevaluate their decisions in life...

I really appreciate the help, I was worried for a bit that the job market wouldn't be as open as it seems, especially for local drivers. Definitely lifted my spirits!

To get my CDL in 2001 cost me less than $500. I did not went to any driving school. Two weeks later I was driving a truck for a company in Michigan. I was paid with 1099 , but I was making about 6 grand per month. One year later I got my first truck.

Any. Even short haul. If it involves a truck. You are exempt from overtime pay etc.
