Tarping

My company does loaded and empty miles and add pays for any additional work and premiums for different things (over-dimensional, heavy weights (i.e. tridems over 88,000 gross in Canada) and tarp/untarp/unload and retarp/etc). During peak periods, miles are consistently 2500-3000 a week and drivers are home every 5-6 days. I've looked, but haven't seen greener grass anywhere.

Most companies, as far as I know, don't usually charge different rates for anything. They have a set mileage rate that they quote the customer and then the customer agrees or negotiates. The only charges placed on top of that is detention pay if the shipper/receiver screws up appointment times or makes drivers arbitrarily wait for no reason.

At the end of the pay period, my company pays slightly above industry average for Manitoba. There are other deck companies in the area that pay more for added work (almost double for a tarp) but they assign straps and tarps to the truck, not the trailer, so every time the trailer switches drivers, they have to untarp and unstrap the load.

It's a waste of time and resources honestly.

 

I don't think much of it....my rates include it so if something does not need tarped (I don't know or care until I arrive) then that is a bonus.

But I only have a 4' drop 25 long tarp so I am really not doing anything that could justify hundreds of extra dollars.

I think I like the numbers mentioned here though.....somewhere between 50 and several hundred..... depending...... if I had to put a price on it....maybe more for some of this huge triple tarp stuff!

 

The company could want it tarped because they have issues with stuff falling off in the past, trying to protect the customer from a lacky driver. Shingles and rolled roofing come to mind.

Does your company supply tarps? How much does it cost them to issue/repair tarps for drivers that don't care about protecting the tarps? Yeah, they probably want to keep some of that "tarp pay".

 

Tarping can protect the shipping plastic from coming apart, keeps it looking better.

 

Yeah, probably, then you won't need to worry about it huh? "now that's an actual wise guy response...

 

It rained on someone, the wood soaked up the water, and they got an overweight ticket... Now everyone tarps.

 

There used to be a outfit by me that drivers could buy there own tarps n get 100% of the tarp pay.
Tarps aren't free. Tarping isn't free.
Plenty of employees don't care if something is taken care of because "it's the company's" and therefore more abuse is expected of their equipment.

 

My rate is $250 per tarp.
