Also if it's for the KAG deal you were talking about I wouldn't worry about being in a hurry, as they are ALWAYS hiring.

I know that this post is old but I'm new to tanker driving and am I loving every minute of it so far. I just started a little while ago and I am pulling for a very small local company and I had no tanker experience but they are training me with a couple of their seasoned drivers. Most everything Lve2drv says is true in my case, but sometimes we have to wait at the rack but I have hauled reefer and dry van OTR for a total of ten years and this is by far best trucking I've found yet. I wish I'd done this move sooner. I am home every night with my wife in my own bed. Our trucks do 75 mph and we are making good money. We get load pay which is the only problem that I could see so far in this type of work as If we were to get held up at the rack it would eat up some $$$ from not getting as many loads but we do get hourly detention if we sit longer than an hour so it does work out. We have 4" hoses and they drop a load in like twenty to twenty five minutes. I'm telling you, If you have a good driving record, Hazmat, tanker endorsement, a sense for safety and perfection and want to be home every night do not hesitate, Give It A Try!!! I would have done this years ago knowing what I know now instead of being gone all the time playing the "Grocery Warehouse Jamboree". The guy I am training with said that I should average around 60-70K and I can see it. Oh, and the hoses are not too bad to handle, they are just a little stiff when they are really cold. We have a lot of older guys working here and they can move them around just fine. They are not as stiff as a the standard chemical hoses and are more user friendly than the ones I used to work with years ago at an ethanol plant.

I wanted to share my experience here with you all so far. This forum has been a god send for me and all of you guys and gals are great help. Be safe out there.

Welcome to the other side driver! I've been tanking for over 4yrs now and have hauled a lot from oil, chem, fuel, and now cryogenic and love it all. From otr, regionl and now local they are all great on the tanker side compared to traditional box work. Cheers!

I started with a company called Andrews logistics out of TX. Not the best tanker gig but they hauled a lot of different products both regionally and local. Started out running refined oil out of Los Angeles.

    Hello there Jvar4001,

I just went down a few months ago and applied at a local propane/fuel delivery company. I seen that they had an add for a transport driver to haul gasoline and diesel fuel to their bulk plants and to the gas stations and truck stops. It took about a month to complete the hiring process. Be paitant but let them know that you are interested in it. The company I got on with here in Western Nebraska seems that they want you (a new hire) to have these five things, 1. A CLEAN MVR 2. A HAZ-MAT with Tanker Endorsement 3. BE DRUG FREE, 4. HAVE NO FELONY CONVICTIONS. & 5. RECENT OTR or in this case any OTR Experience. Like I said, I had NO tanker experience whatsoever I mean that I had literally never driven a tanker until now and they hired me anyway after two interviews. I had been out of a truck for 1-1/2 years prior to getting this job, but I do have 10 years of safe OTR though so I am sure that helps.

In my opinion, if you have these five requirements met, I'd go try and apply at someplace and let your record and experience speak for itself and see how it all goes. Once I got my foot in the door the hiring manager told me that they can't hardly find anyone that meets this criteria and would even of been willing to help me get my Haz-Mat had I not had it just because of my safe driving record and other qualifications. It is just hard to find clean drivers I guess! If you have a local pipeline around where you live, maybee see if you could talk to some of the drivers that come and go from it to find some good companies in your area. Or if you see a gas tanker filling a gas station talk to him or her and see if they could point you in the right direction. I will tell you this, If and probably when you get your tanker job, you will not look back at OTR the same way or at least I don't anyway It is a whole different world. I'm not used to making close or equal to OTR wages and being home every night!!!! I did a load of gas today started at 9:30am this morning and I was done around 6PM tonight and am back home writing this.

    Best Regards -Ryan

Several years back my company ordered a bulk load of oil from ConocoPhillips 76 out of LA. We were a Chevron jobber but the salesmen were experimenting to get a cheaper product. I pulled in late and there was a guy there from Texas with the load. It was his second week with Andrews. He had old t shirts all over the ground trying to soak up the mess he was making. I felt horrible for the guy. He was sweating and said he had no idea what he was doing. I stayed an extra 2 hours that night to clean up and get that load off for him. I had to show him how to pump it off. Poor dude, he either didn’t pay attention or his training was bad. But, if calikid worked there, it wasn’t the training.
