I am currently 20 and was wanting to become a trucker. I was thinking about going through Prime Inc. to get my cdl once I’m 21 and to stick with them for a year to gain the experience needed for most companies. I’ve seen it posted before but not too many discussions on if it will actually happen and what it would mean if it does happen, but I’ve been seeing a lot of talk about autonomous/self driving trucks happening soon, and there being estimates for them being common by 2020-2025. It’s looking like this could happen and if self driving trucks really happen as soon as they’re saying will it cause the majority of truckers to be out of a job, and would it still be worth it to get a cdl and get into trucking? I’m wanting to get my dream of trucking going but I’m doubting it will happen seeing as their time frame for self driving trucks is right around when I would be hopefully getting into the industry.

Like any new tech it ALWAYS takes waaaaaaaaaaay longer for big changes to occur....the internet was born in what 1980? Wasn't until 20-30 years later it was very useful. With autonomous trucks it'll be "teaming" that takes off first before bots fully replacing drivers. Get your cdl..waters warm, plenty of jobs

    That's right; go for it.
Where is your location? Plenty of companies to choose from that have cdl training.

The roads aren't in good enough shape for them. The autonomous needs perfect roads. So it can 'see'. Get off a perfect freeway and they have problems.
The Saudi's are creating a completely new city. Much of the reason is they want lots of autonomous vehicles. No way it can be done with their old roads in their cities.
I'm imagining that truck "trains" of one driver truck, and many others behind it will come first. Follow the leader sort of thing. More easily done.

Been there done that. Loads have been delivered by Robot trucks, also certain robot trucks have crossed Hoover Dam itself on the old crossing with minor adjustments by a human due to crazy rock formation confusing the computer and requiring a little of this and that which is not within it's programming limits.

Eventually robot trucks will eliminate the cost, damage, liability of humans etc on the road. We will get to enjoy the wonders of trucks that never stop because there is no more HOS to enforce. This will be more likely by 2050.

Actually there is one company doing the convoy application...its like how bicycle racers draft off each other.. Peloton Technologies. Think JB Hunt is partnered with them. Theres a vid on their site: Peloton Technology | Truck Platooning & Automation
