I would choose a company with lots of California freight, and a decent terminal in California
Use California for my home time location.
Whenever they send you east, imediately put in for sometime..be creative.

Did you try Britton Transport? I know you can take the children with you.

Danny Herman has a terminal in Fontana CA we use a drop yard in Calexico for cross border freight. No terminal there, most drivers use the jack n the box truck stop nearby. Depending on freight we sometimes bobtail to LA for eastbound loads.

I have been with Shaffer/Crete for 9 months now, and have few complaints.

The biggest complaint I have is that the company doesn't have APUs. They use opti-idle systems. I do not like getting thrown around in my bunk during a rough start/stop of the engine.

Recently, there has been another thing bothering me, where correct loaded calls are rejected because Crete has bad temperature settings in their load data. But hopefully it will get fixed soon. If you drive the Crete side dry vans, this issue wont be a concern.

The last significant concern I have is that Crete/Shaffer *really* wants OTR drivers to run @500 miles a day and chase their 70. I prefer to roll as hard and long as I can, since the potential income is higher that way. I have made an arrangement with my asset manager to chase my 70 this time out. If the money isn't roughly the same, I may move on to another company with APUs and performance-based pay.

That's been my experience as well, OTR working out of Marietta, GA. This trip out will be a bit short of 50 days. It started with a GA-WA run, then a WA - OH run and has been all Midwest and East coast since then. Until today when I will be starting an AL - CA run.

I've mentioned elsewhere that Crete / Shaffer do not have dedicated OTR planners. They have regional planners, and I'm pretty sure that they have a policy that if you are out of your home area, and a OTR load from a non-home region will send you closer to your home region, that's the load you will get if they do not have a strong need to send you in a different direction.
