There is a reason I sometimes refer to truck stops as "whine bars". There will always be trucking... because as the cliche says, "without trucks America stops"... and "if you bought it, a truck brought it". The industry is changing, as is our culture and society. What form trucking will have in five years is anyone's guess, especially now that we have invited government to be intensely involved in every aspect of our lives with socialism having been chosen in November. The "little black box" rumor could very well become reality.

The trucking industry is just like everything else in life! It makes changes all the time. Some good, some bad! I will tell you this. IT IS GOING TO BE WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT! I realize that DOT has become much harder on us and the fines seem to be down right ridiculous. But with that we have gotten better equipment! Most companies get rid of there trucks now after 3 years because out of service violations and break downs cost way to much money! A lot of "old school" drivers complain because of the HOS changes. Me personaly I appreciate them. I used to run two log books, and knew all the tricks to make them look legal. With todays "black box's" being outfitted to most trucks it isnt possible to do this anymore. And I say Thank God! I like getting sleep. I like having time to shower and eating a meal outta the truck. As far as the money I think its better today then it ever has been. I made almost 70K last year pulling a dry bulk tanker and was home atleast 3 nights per week. However this coming year Im looking for a new ride. We have just become to slow in the plastics hauling business. But most of the companies I have looked at are offering .38cpm plus bonus. When it comes to Bonus read the fine print. Some companies offer great bonus's but almost impossible to obtain. But lets take a look at what I can make at .38cpm
The economy is week but companies like Conway just as an example here are still keeping busy and most importantly being honest with me. They wont promise 3000K a week but say 2200 is guarenteed providing I dont turn loads down. So 2200 ( and thats a good avg cuz your gonna have better and worse) thats 836.00 per week. Granted much less then Im used to but still better then my neighbor that just got laid off wed. 836 is just shy of 44.ooo per year. Now add bonus of what should be atleast 2000 per year. So Im hopeing to make at least 48.000 this year with a new ride. Again far short of what I made the last couple of years but I know we will pull out of this bad economy. I dont know about where everyone else lives, but here in Akron, ohio jobs are very slim and making 50k is almost impossible. If Im making 48.000 or hell even 38.000 and everyone else is getting laid off I think Im way ahead of the game!
If you get out of school and get hired do what you gotta do to keep that job. I dont care what company hires you. Times will get better we all agree. Keep your nose and record clean and in a year or two you and the rest of us will be able to cash in again for those better paying seats.
Wecome to the crazy life of trucking! Fact is we are the the last of the american cowboys! (and cowgirls)
gatorformer yankee and ScooterDawg Thank this. -
Because I would not turn loose of driving job that got me home 3 or even 4 days a week. That could net me $18k a year.
Especially for one that mostly certainly guarantees I would be away from home at least 14 or more days, with 2 off.
I understand the reasons many would do that. I'm just not one of them, anymore. I'll drive a garbage truck for $24k a year. Before I'll go back OTR for $48k a year. Not much difference really...about $4k
I've had my turn in the barrel. It's someone else's turn now. (if you're not familiar with that joke, I'll be happy to enlighten you) -
