#1 reason is I take home time my way. I like to stay out then take 4 even 5 days in a row. I choose my route and fuel location. No micro management. At JB I only sorta get to pick my loads. Sometimes they just plunk one on me but I'm free to say no. I rarely do unless the load stinks. I think that wins points with fleet manager because except for my truck breakdowns I tend not to be a pain in the neck. I only make slightly more than a company driver I admit but I also get to keep my dogs with me, I have never had a manager call and question how I schedule my time. As a company driver I've had them call me and ask how come I'm taking more than a 10 hr break. Hey..sometimes I need a little extra sleep, pal.
Its just a job but its a better job imo.

What you described certainly is life at a mega. I drive for a smaller company and pick how many days I stay home within reason. Often times I had to get on them for too much home time. They never tell me how to run or when to sleep as long as the load is on time. I can fuel anywhere I want as long as it's a Pilot or Flying J. Actually, I sometimes have to micromanage them when they forget things due to being overburdened with office tasks. Once you prove yourself you gain a lot of leverage, even as a company driver.

Have you considered Dave's offer? Sounds like you'd have a lot of freedom without being beholden to truck expenses for their truck.

I wouldn't let atbs touch my books if they paid me. A few years ago a buddy of mine had a huge tax bill and asked me to take a look and see what the problem was. In just a few minutes i found over 20k in deductions they didn't claim.

Moral of the story: get a real accountant with an actual degree in accounting or so your own. I woukd recommend a mixture of both. Keep your own books and use a good accountant for to double check them and file. However, good accountants aren't cheap, but they are with the money. They will catch little things you and i might not be aware of.

The fleets dump those 300-400K emissions trucks that have had zero maintenance and a flock of new drivers in them. Almost impossible not to dump 15K into them in repairs.....

Monday update. Wonder of wonders the egr component that is responsible for coolant leak really is under warrantee and the starter installed by premier frtliner in ft worth was faulty so that will be reimbursed. So Bcl has authorized those two items. Working with these guys is like watching a 40 year old woman do a strip tease. Its agonizingly slow and you just want it to be over so the next act can get on stage. Tomorrow perhaps they will authorize rear brake shoes. Apparently they became saturated with oil probably from that recently repaired cracked transmission that was mysteriously not covered under the power train warrantee. However saturated rear brakes may very well be the cause of the steering chatter when I brake under load.
JB has got my back on this 100% and are keeping the pressure up and paying for my room.

Since it looks like bcl is going to finally buckle and do the right thing my fluffy pink cloud of a shiny sparkly brand new truck is fading. I think I'm glad. It depends on how much I can get fixed before the bcl bank gives out.
But as a follow-up. I heard you guys choose cascadia evo over kenworth t680 and the confirmation came when I talked to the folks at excel truck repair here. Detroit over cummins when it comes to the new engines and the dt12 automatic is solid. So there ya go.
