Getting a job on "Ice Road Truckers?"

NO Ice roads for me!!!!! I prefer the South!!!!!

 

Both You can google Ice roads in Alaska. There are several lakes in Alaska that in the winter are turned into Ice roads. on The north slope burough ther are several areas where in the winter, Ice roads are the only way to truck in supplies.

From what I've read, and the impression I got, .......
Is that the truckin' company(ies) that hired mis-fit drivers to fill seats ----
often, it seems, in mis-fit Big trucks, are being viewed as clowns?

Which kinda made those company(ies) who WOULDN'T, probably, even have considered them for the position(s),
lose respect for any company who would, and it seems, did hire them? Not to mention their reputation(s).

I'm thinkin' maybe the arm-pits of the frozen north.

ANY way for a BucK?
Even if it paints a bad image?
Disguised as good?

I also wonder if those truckin' companies that played along with fantasy were aware of what reality would turn out to be.

The company that was on this show IS & was a "misfit"...they were banned from the NWT right after the show...I think..personally there was a reason the show wasn't available up here...I think there would have been alot of outrage over it.

That's exactly right...they likely couldn't get a job with the reputable companies. And, knowing most of the reputable ones up there, I imagine they nixxed being involved...so if the show was to proceed they had to "scrape the bottom of the barrel" just to have drivers at all.

From what I understand...The History Channel told Nuna Logistics..the owners of the road... that the show was going to be a DOCUMENTARY...HA Anyway, when the approached Nuna about another season...Nuna, understandably, said "NO THANKS"...they were stunned at the show.

Mostly I leave Mandy at home now, it's too cold.

I don't know if I ever did mention what was under the hood of my "large car". Anyway I have a twin turboed 550 Cat, 18 speed Eaton/Fuller, 3.73 Eaton rears.

 

AfterShock..our plow truck drivers have a bit of a sense of humour up here...There's a place, near Fort Nelson is real bad for moose...they are BIG & plentiful...anyway somebody hit one & the plow guys stood it up in the snow...right on a curve...so when you rounded the curve at night you saw the ###### thing...scared the crap out of me a few times...but always reminded me to be extra careful on that stretch of road!

 

You hit the nail on the head right there Hyper. I lived through much worse in the early 80's when the federal LIBS tried to destroy Alberta's economy & steal our provinces wealth, I managed to stay employed throughout & the companies that survived did it by offering superior service & reliability. And I think that's what will happen again.

No, I only go as far as Whitehorse now, but have been as far North as Inuvik...pretty much as far as you can go!

You are right about the difference in road conditions Sundance, the cold ...sometimes...does make it a bit easier to drive on.

Toad River Lodge is closed for the winter now, with the price of fuel, they felt the couldn't afford to stay open for the winter. There's no power or anything there, so everything is by diesel powered generators, so you can imagine what it cost them when fuel was so high this year...You guys thought you had it bad paying over $4/gallon for fuel...up north we paid higher than SIX!

I love the stretch of the old highway...from Steamboat to Fireside...reminds me of what it was like when I ran there 10+ years ago...the highway was only rebuilt to Wonowon then, & they didn't have the trees cleared back from the highway like they do now...the treetops used to touch over the middle of the road!


And coming up to Watson Lake, you used to drive right through Lower Post..the highway is not anything like it was 10 years ago...used to take nearly 2 hours just to pull Steamboat...first time I was back on the highway after Steamboat was filled in 5 years ago I didn't even realize I was on it till I saw the old settlement...I couldn't believe what they'd done the that mountain!

Army Hill was the same... I talked to a few REAL oldtimers I know...my grandfather was on the road crew that built the highway...he told me once it used to take a whole DAY to get from Ft. Nelson to Steamboat! And it's only 57 miles! So you can just imagine what the road used to be like!

 

Which company? I'm not sure what you mean...If you mean the comment I made to AfterShock about the unreputable one's that sometimes manage to get past the scales at Enterprise...well that's the one that was on that stupid show...I know most of the guys at the scales...they're way different from the guys down there...I was told by them that the company that was on the show was banned from the NWT.

My Pete is a 63 unibilt...Since I run alone I felt I had no need of a larger one, and because I pull extended length, I had wheelbase restrictions to consider. 244" wheelbase is the maximum allowed here.

Is any one brand of engine better than another when
it comes to operating in the extreme cold up thar?
