Got a response from Garmin. Apparently, just as the USB transfer requires a secure USB with authentication to work in inspection mode, the Bluetooth works the same way...needs to be a secure device with an extra level of authentication, not just any old phone. Would be nice if the paperwork accompanying the ELD explained that...but now at least I have the email from them saying why it wasn't working with my phone or the officer's phone. Wonder if any of the other "local transfer" type devices are set up this way? The officer seemed to know about the secure USB drive issue before we ever attempted that route...but never would've guessed there was a similar type of requirement for Bluetooth transfer.

Question I have, though, is if I have an ELD that meets the federal standards, but I cannot transfer the data to the officer because the officer does not have the equipment necessary to receive, is that still a violation? Seems to me if I had to spend the money to buy one of these stupid ELD's because they were required, then the enforcement agencies ought to have to buy the necessary tools receive the data. How is that MY fault when they choose not to have what they need?

Because there used to be a rule that required the driver to be able to print his logs.
I do not know if the ELD mandate still has that requirement??

I wonder.....are you allowed to present 8 days of old fashioned loose leaf? You need to run parallel paper and electronic anyway because you never know when you’ll lose a gps or cell connection. Is there anything in the rule that specifically states the logs must be generated from the elog machine?

Per the mandate, you cannot edit an automatic driving transition. The only way you can edit a driving event, is if you manually selected a driving status, which would be the equivalent of using the device in AOBRD Mode. I was looking at their website the other day. It seems, some of their information is outdated.

Only in the event of a device malfunction. You then have 8 days to get the problem fixed. The cell connection is only used, to transmit the data to a web portal. All the devices utilize either bluetooth or hardwire conn ection, to record data to the mobile device (i.e. tablet, phone, or dedicated unit), which stores locally (cell service or not).

If they don't have the secure device, they have been instructed to utilize the FMCSA Data Transfer or E-mail functions. Which send the logs to a central database. Both of which require THEM to enter a reference number, so they can access the logs. They CAN NOT e-mail the logs to themselves. This is their responsibility to know this. If they can't get at it, that's their problem. Your responsibility as a driver has been met, when you hand over the Driver Card & Inspection instructions and access the Roadside Inspection Screen on the ELD.

VDO RoadLog ELD Selection Tool | VDO RoadLog™

VDO Roadlog Solo says "available anywhere there's an internet connection". What if the driver doesn't have an internet connection? How does the driver print his logs? I imagine he will have to have a loose leaf backup. What am I missing?

Yes I know. And According to their website, It would appear I need internet access to use it. So what if he doesn’t have a signal?
