Distractions are distractions. The distance or purpose does not matter.

Is it really a distraction to learn that traffic is at a dead stop just over that next hill? Or that white-out conditions exist 3 miles up the road? Or that there's a drunk driver coming at you without his lights on? Or that your trailer doesn't have any lights because the pigtail fell out? Or that there is an issue with your load that needs to be addressed? Or that you've got a tire going flat? Or lug nuts are being flung off your trailer?

Stuff happens, and being able to communicate with those around you is never a bad thing.

Have you ever used one before?

Apparently not if you found it necessary to make this statement.

Well, aren't you the authority. The law reads a commincation device. Could be a two way handheld, a cell phone or CB. The law us trying to get to avoid being distracted. So you believe that even though you cant put a cell phone up to your mouth a microphone is OK? Just wait and see. I see a ban coming on hands free devices. And when you reach up and and change your GPS that could be a form of texting. You are touching a screen. Georgia has just passed a law for every one that a cell phone can't be in your hand period while driving. It's coming.

Even the most stringent laws against the use of electronic devices have exceptions for close range 2-way radios. Why? Because in some situations, THEY ARE REQUIRED BY LAW! So which law are you going to break, the one that says you must be in communication or the one that says you CAN'T be in communication? The law recognizes the fact that it is safer to be in communication with those around you, and that prohibiting this communication decreases the overall safety of everyone on the road.

Close range 2-way radio communication won't be banned...not unless or until there is something better in place to replace it.

Yes, I do, because truckers including myself have been yapping on radios for generations and nothing of the sort has ever came close to the modern plague known as the cell phone, which requires a hell of a lot more involvement from the operator than simply holding a button.

That one of the most unfair comparisons I’ve seen in a long time.

Not my idea. Just telling you what I believe is coming. Anytime you are talking, no matter what device you use, you are being distracted. Even with a person in the seat beside you.

I believe that bluetooth will be required on CBs. They don't want anything in your hand, including a hamburger.

And again, a burger that's falling apart and dripping on you is a completely different situation than a CB. If properly mounted, operating a CB is no different than shifting gears.

And they keep adding more complex infotainment systems to trucks, with ever more buttons to find and push. Yet that's all less distracting than a watch or a cell phone or a CB? Hardly...
