I just got my class 1 in Alberta.
As i have no experience theres very little options for me.
I spoke to 2 companies who would hire new drivers but one of them pays 20 cents a mile for month and then raise 2 cents every 3 months upto 28 cents max. Thay said team drivers drives over 20k miles/week so roughly 2k a week doesnt sound bad.
Other companie has training program they want me to pay 20k for training and after completion in 3 to 6 months if they like what am doing they ll hire me. They pay 44 cents per mile as starting wage after training.
Not going there just thought i should tell my experience.
I heard Bison hires new drivers but they do 2 years of contract and start at $800 a week until you finish your training.
What do experience drivers think?
Please note I am very broke and may start working as a cook again but that doesn't pay more that 18/hour so am pretty lost what to do
20c/mile new driver. Worth it?

20 k a month redo your numbers .. both sound like they take advantage of new uninformed drivers
6rider and BigHossVolvo Thank this. -
Contact more companies, someone will hire you since you have your Class 1
These companies offer training to fleece you, cheap labour!
No reason you should have to train, that’s the BS newbies deal with in the USA.BigHossVolvo Thanks this. -
$.20 a mile??? Really?? I started at $.25 a mile....back in 1988!!! Gonna be tough to live off that!!
Justrucking2, Oldironfan and Noobtr Thank this. -
$18 an hour...for cooking?! Why would you want to drive a truck?? I need to move to Canada...ehh!!!
austinmike, Cattleman84, bigmotor1212 and 1 other person Thank this. -
As someone who did the new driver thing 2 years ago, I did Bison. It was ####ing bad, but it wasn't 0.20/mile bad.
I don't know if Challenger is hiring in Calgary right now, but they would be my first suggestion. My second suggestion, would be to go with Versa Cold. Yes I know the pay package is abysmal, I actually know the recruiters (they're Ex Bison also) and we had words over the extremely low pay to start (for 6 months) BUT, at-least they are giving guys a shot. Their argument for the low pay, is their insurance for less than 1 year exp, is 10X that of someone with 2 years exp, so they have to Pro Rate accordingly. However, they have some good perks and benefits, they have freight, they have nice equipment and most importantly....THEY DO NOT SLIP SEAT! So if I had to do it again, would I work for low pay in an assigned truck for 6 months to prove myself, vs more pay, but slip seating and under the insane contract of Bison; Option 1 all day long. -
I've had my Class 1 for over 6 years but never drove professionally. Just the odd road test here and there. If 20 cents is the going rate for a new driver then driving is one dream I'm going to axe off the bucket list lol.
rabbiporkchop and BigBob410 Thank this. -
New Driver wages at:
0-2 Months = $0.20/Mile
3-4 Months = $0.22/Mile
5-6 Months = $0.24/Mile
$15 - Pick Up from 1st
$10 - Drop from 1st
$10/hr Waiting Time
$50 - Safety Training
4% - Vacation Pay
I don't like it either, but coming from a corporate background, I know what they're dealing with as far as insurance and operating costs go. I will give them props, as there is no stupid contract to deal with, they don't slip seat, and you will always get paid. I just look at it, as its the same as going to trade school or getting a certificate at a Polytechnic; only you're making money instead of spending it.
The options in Alberta VS BC/Ontario/Manitoba are very limited. So People Express and Lightspeed simply are not options. That leaves Bison, sometimes Challenger and Versacold. As I said above, I would do Versa Cold over Bison, if I had to do it over again. Best of the worst. -
It really sound too good to be true to me. And seems impossible to do 20000 miles a week -
Is that in Canadian currency?
