I've been out of trucking for over 10 years. During this time, I've sold cars and did local Bus driving jobs. But, the itch has come upon me again, the kids are now grown and on their own and the prospect of saving up some money while living out of a truck is appealing. With no recent experience, the usual suspects have gotten applications from me and like my 3rd or 4th choice wants me to do a DOT physical and schedule me for training. Should I take the Physical even though I'm still waiting on other responses or just stall them some. Or does all this sound crazy?

I wouldn’t do anything such as that for a company unless I committed to taking the job. Sounds like you don’t really want to work for those people to begin with so I wouldn’t waste your time or theirs

You’re going to have to do it anyway, regardless of what company you go with...so why not?

“But Six, these companies are going to require me to do the physical at their facilities anyway. So why should I?”

Perhaps. Perhaps not. At least if you take it now, there won’t be any surprises.

I guess there are bright spots out there. But for the most part, the industry has only gone down in the last ten years. Just letting ya know.

If you will, tell us which companies you've applied with.
Maybe myself or others on here can give you more options.

I'm confused about what seems to be a reluctance to go get a physical in some of these questions I have been noticing this for quite some time now. A physical should take no more then 20 minutes once you get in the exam room. If you have a health issue then that is different. Your body and health should come first.

    I feel the same way.

Go get a full physical with blood tests to see how your health really is. The road and demands of trucking can have some problems on your health with the food, stress and hours demanded of you. I am trying to work my way back to a 2 year med card, when I went to renew last winter I had planters factious in full force and could not pass the test without being able to stand. Been working on it and might be able to pass but seeing what is going on out there am in no hurry. Found replacement work so no stress, just miss the road.

I paid for my physical and behind the wheel tests just so I could have my pick. If you can't honestly decide if you want to work for them or not then I wouldn't start the process through them.

I just got back in the truck after 10 years away.

31 applications rejected before I found Company 32. Supposed to be out M-F, weekends off.....don't always work out that way.

Anyway, I went and got a DOT physical out of pocket, just to be sure I could pass. And the place I ended up working for doesn't have a preferred clinic. You go where you want and they reimburse you.

So I agree with the others: Don't start the process with anyone you don't want to work for.

So, I went for the physical today. My BP was like 148/86. They gave me a 1-year card. But, they require 140/90 or lower. So, I'll make an appointment to see my doctor and see what he says.
