I just had a thought, don't know if it's a good one or not.

Have you ever thought of having anyone do a tune on your ECM? I think you said you're still under warranty so I don't know if that would affect you or not.

I was just wondering that because if the computer isn't controlling the timing or duration of your injection correctly (for better emissions or whatever reason) that could cause you problems that a tune might help with.

Glad to hear your truck is running better.

    Diesel Dave Thanks this.

    Wow Troy.
Wow Troy. Carbon burned from combustion bypassing seats.
But I bet you let go of a big deep breath when "finally" you found the end of a long dilemma.
Staring out the glass wondering, thinking, and guessing all day. Going to bed / waking up / eating etc constantly thinking , picturing every function of the engine and beyond, trying to come to a conclusion to get it over with.
    I hear ya.
Glad it's over for ya and you can get back to thinking about other stuff
( if you remember what you use to think of before being married to solving the problem!!)
    Great to hear Troy.
I started trucking in 1980. Never was I as stumped and desperate in finding the end to it all. Shop after shop. From one
" CAT specialist" to another, they all acknowledged the problem but had no resolve as they didn't know what it was.
Well...im off to bed. Gotta get through Toronto in few hrs before traffic gets bad.
    Stay in touch.

I had that thought but it was short lived. But you're right, I need to get my ECM tuned. Feels like timing is out or something along those lines.
I'll start checking into it in the morning and keep ya posted.
    Have a good night.

    Oxbow and SAR Thank this.

this has been an issue for me since 2014, 2 years after the platinum rebuild. tech says those injectors have never been properly seated from the start. there should be a carbon buildup where the lower o-ring sits that helps to seal the injectors in the seats, the o-ring burns up and carbon replaces it...not one of the injectors had any carbon on the tips.

I'll see if he'll send me the borescope photos tomorrow. all the seats are warped or uneven, one even has severe pitting. tech said he has never seen anything like it.

and yes, I am beside myself with joy...this has to be it!!

I would love to see ‘truck engine machinist’ do the seats on a new head to see what comes up. My money is on the seats being poor even thoughthe head is new.
Maybe he will chime in. If it were me I would have the injector seats redone before the new head went on.

they are going to use prussian blue dye to check the injector to seat surfaces on the new head before installing it on my engine. we did it with the new injectors on my old head and every seat had abnormal contact with the injector. the seats in the reman head installed during the platinum rebuild was never machined properly from the start according to the tech and the service manager. the engine is 2 years out of warranty, but we have paperwork showing this was an issue that wasn't resolved before the warranty expired. all parts on warranty, new injectors and head, but we have to eat the labour. will be around $4K Canadian when it's done, but if it stops running like a bag of #### under load it will be worth it.

I still don't understand how there isn't a class action sue against Caterpillar, they charge for their scrap like if it was gold, this isn't an isolated case, there has to be thousands of trucks out there with this problem, at least 3 out of ten engines I know were rebuilt with Caterpillar heads has all these symptoms, just recently a kid I know rebuilt his 5EK the reman head had multiple bent valves and couple were broken when they found out called the dealer and their answer was bring it back we will send it to a laboratory and when we get the result we'll let you know if we are going to give you another head, it will be around a month, there was word exchange and a little of a scuffle, then one of the guys that works on the back came to investigate recognized the head and said that head was damage since they got it and it was't supposed to be sold.

They gave him another head and since start up he has all of these symptoms, I told him to go with IPD head but the tech suggested genuine Cat reman .

I'm so sick and tired of hearing problems with Caterpillar parts and what they charge for their crap.

I don't recall doing a new head. I usually feel that the seats warp from heat, but I do not know for sure.

Cat has begun to get picky with cores also. Broken rockers are no longer good core. I find myself using more IPD parts also.
