Hey guys, I’m looking to get into a paid CDL training program. I’m 22 and located in Louisiana. Currently looking into the Reefer division with Prime, but seems like the reefer division as a whole is a lot of sitting. In general, I’d like to know which division has the least waiting involved or why reefer would be a good division to start out with.

    Thanks

Waiting for what? If you’re talking about loading and unloading times.
And yes reefer is usually longest waiting around and balls early appointments

Welcome to trucking you cant escape the waiting lol

You might find out that the Reefers with floor loads, slip sheet and big to small wood involves a great deal of physical moving of boxes. 550 cases of beef totalling 48000 pounds for example.

Trucking has alot of sitting, but for that you have the opportunity for physical labor. Most people in the 20's and 30's have no trouble with the work, some decline physically after 40's towards 55 into disability from hard labor moving freight.

Shop around some more. Not knocking Prime, but there are other reefer companies with their own cdl schools.
I pulled reefers for 18 years and really liked it; otherwise wouldn't have stayed with it so long.
One new driver that posts on here went with FFE (Frozen Food Express) and is averaging $1500.00 weekly.
Make some phone calls with these companies. Keep in mind, hiring areas change, so a website may have something like, "we only hire in XYZ states" but if you ask, they may also hire in your state, but haven't updated their website.
These listed below have cdl school.
KLLM (also owns FFE) - runs 48 states
FFE (Frozen Food Express) - runs 48 states
    Stevens Transport runs 48 states
Jim Palmer Trucking - runs 48 states
Wil-Trans (owned by Jim Palmer Trucking) - runs eastern half of USA.
Roehl Transport - don't know their freight lanes.
Western Dairy Transport - www.wdtmilk.com - tanker company that hauls milk.

As to your question about wait times; you'll be paid "detention pay" for wait times, Each company has their own policy as to how much per hour you will be paid. The reefer outfits I worked for started hourly pay for wait times after one hour of waiting. You also get "stop pay" so that covers the first hour of wait time and is usually a lot more than the detention hourly pay.

Thanks for the help, couldn’t figure out what Prime detention pay was. Will be looking into other companies as well. Two people recommending WDT must mean it’s pretty good but age requirement is 23.

May I ask why you say shop around instead of going with Prime? I thought it was a great gig with their benefits and starting pay.

It's always better to shop around and make comparisons. I'm not knocking Prime, but Jim Palmer and others have about the same pay scale.
