I don't believe the OP was referring to an OTR type of role. Layovers are for us daycab guys that tread out farther than usual every now and again. Can't make it back to the barn so we have to grab a room for our break.

I understand, and I would think, at most, the company pay for a motel but any other pay is silly. You aren't doing anything work related. You're just sitting in a different place. That's how most of my bosses felt. I wanted to get paid, from the time I got to the yard, until I left, and just found jobs that did that. If you count layover time as working time, until you leave the yard for home, you'll be working for $2 dollars/hr.That wasn't for me.

I don’t get layover pay, but do get detention pay. $30/hour after 2 hours.
I got paid very nicely one weekend to sit around and sight see, because someone messed up somewhere. I had a scheduled appointment on a holiday. The shipper was not open.
Just yesterday I was at a delivery and waited and waited finally I went in told them in 10 minutes detention kicks in. AMAZINGLY, it was unloaded in that time, jerks.

Yup hotel goes on the company card and they pay for a meal. I'm good with that once the 10 is up right back on the clock even if I'm waiting for whatever reason.

Detention pay is a different story. When I had my own truck, I too, got detention pay after 2 hours, and yes, many times, it got the ball rolling. When I was by the hour, I never got any incentive to sit, or overtime either. Just straight by the hour until I got back.

My layover is "how much do you want?" and it depend on how I'm feeling. I believe I got $180 a day for one, but last time I asked for $125 and they countered with $150. I was happy with it because it was basically missing half a day of driving plus a hotel stay for my 34.

I guess I really can't talk about layover pay, because I never took loads that required that. At some of the companies I worked for, they had the "sleeper truck" for just such overnight loads. It was usually some POS Transtar cabover with a tired 318, and who knows where the mattress had been and on the rare overnights I did do, I kept my regular tractor and slept across the seats. Lot of other guys did too, we built a box to go in between the seats Motel? Not a chance, unless I paid for it. That was the old times, my friends.

I’ve got a CLC card. I still pay for the hotel, but I get a good discount if I choose to stay in one. If we’re away from home and want to drink it works out well.
