    PharmPhail,

I've read through these posts and have some questions about the trucking endeavor.

If you have a degree in Pharmacy why would even consider the risk of being an O/O, setting aside experience? Can't a part time Pharmacist at Wal-Mart make $45,000+ and be home every night? If the road is calling you, can't you pimp pills for the pharmacudical companies directly to doctors and make $90,000-120,000 a year driving a company Lincoln Navigator and staying in Holiday Inns?

If you really want to be a big truck O/O. Why not lease to own with a big company(ie Call a CRE recruiter and tell them you wanna be in your own truck ASAP). and get your experience with them mainly to minimize finacial risk to yourself? I mean if your smart(which I think you are) and CYA you can use them for experience, and then dive into getting your own authorty/truck ect.... With minimal damage to your credit(remember some of these companies don't have the best of reputations).

Sorry, just trying to understand why your taking a somewhat risky plunge. At the same time, wishing you the best in the endeavor.

Yes, you're right. It's almost as if there's more to the story.

I can tell you that not all truckers make good businessmen, and this is also true of pharmacists. However, my background was all business prior to either. In this sense, I'm more comfortable with the cart than the horse. While going O/O means that I did not have to go to a certified trucking school to learn to drive, I did anyway, and my father was also a trucker. So I'm not really trying to cut any corners there.

Last, my financial disposition is such that I should be able to see and weather a few warning signs of impending failure before it affects me too much.

I appreciate the well wishes. We'll see how it goes, and either I'll confirm why you don't do what I'm doing, or I will become an example that anything is possible. I'm just as excited to find out as anyone.

I don't know what training is if it's not getting help when you need it, and I do that. In large part, I've been in training about 8-12 hours a day right here since November, and I still find more questions to ask. I assume you all do and I see that you all do as well from time to time. It's never over.

Some of these guys are out of their minds. My boss called on a load he thought was a misprint yesterday. 44k, flat from Ennis ,,TX to Seattle, WA. 2200 miles. $1500.00. The guy was serious. Wouldn't even budge off that insane number. .68 cents a mile. Charles told him what he thought of his load, his company, and I think his parents and family. WTF are some of these morons thinking?

i pull reefers and only sometimes get loads off of a loadboard. have a really good broker i deal with. havent had a load over 25,000 lbs in the last month and still hauling for around 2.00 a mile. of course they are usually 3-6 stops. but on occasion i get 2 stops.
almost make another dollar a mile by doing the unloading myself. just hauled 3 pallets for him and got full truck rate. if i do get a load off of a board i try my best to haggle with them especially if they need it picked up within a few hours. can usually get them to go up a little bit.
