One of my chores I want to get done on my recent purchase.

You think it would be easier to drop the tanks and polish them?

Yes. Make sure you get some new rubber strips. It’s about $8 a ft. You don’t have to drop them all the way just enough to get the buffer in the top.

Then in the future you can just hand polish the top. 178E988C-1C7F-4CDA-8E73-EA77AAE6C22E.jpeg CA569586-15F2-426F-94A2-4E3686BFD704.jpeg 86342610-0DB0-4C0F-9016-746C770EEC87.jpeg
Those bolts are $38 each so do your best to save the old ones.

I've given up on rubber strips. They don't last. I use 2" cargo straps....and stainless nuts and bolts

    Yeah, I hear ya.
Guessing the stuff I took off was original from 18 years ago? If the new stuff last another 18 years we will be all good? My guess is the tanks will rot through before then?

Bad part is everyone uses 2” rubber except international.

    Lol

I was considering making a new thread, but I will add to this thread.

In the last week I discovered that my driver's side tank is leaking fuel if my tanks are more than 3/4 full. The leak is under the back strap.

I already had a shop take off the tank and pressure test it. They found a leaking gasket from the fuel gauge sender, but nothing else. First time I fueled full after that I had the same leaking. It goes away after the tanks are 3/4 full. It comes from underneath the back strap.

I'm thinking about pulling the tank myself, then using JB Weld to patch the leak, THEN using Flex Tape over the entire interface between the straps and tank.

Any thoughts? Any idea what tools I need to get that done with a T2000?

My new rubbers didn’t last 18 months. That’s when I went to cargo straps

I’ve used JB weld to “bondo” pin holes. Then 2” cargo straps instead of rubber as mentioned above. It worked really well. It’s lasted ~8 yrs so far. Aero fairings are murder on fuel tanks because the tanks never get washed

Yeah I would guess there is a pinhole leak there somewhere. It’s usually where the 2 different metals touch.

Most people have an aluminum band put on around the entire thing where the straps hold it.

Epoxy or jb weld sounds like it works too?
