Hey, everyone. So, I've lost most of the vision in my left eye, and after seeing several doctors about this I've been told that I'll probably never get it back unfortunately. My vision in my right eye is perfectly fine, though. I know I'll never pass a DOT physical like this, but I really don't want to stop driving truck, so I was wondering what I would have to do to get the vision waiver. How long does the whole process take and what all do I need? Thanks in advance..

You are required to have two eyes that function to visual acuity needed for Trucking.

You could have a limited Tier Two for example for non Interstate, non intrastate trucking. To Wit, Farm work specifically within a very small zone and recovering the dead from a post nuclear strike against the USA for example. No medical needed to do this.

Unfortunately without a vision waiver you will not be able to continue trucking. Report asap to the nearest SSA (Social Security Administration) Office and file for SSdI (Disability) based on blindness. It will take a year or so, a review by the Administrative Law Judge and one or two denials of your application during that time, You refill it out and send it back in. Once before the judge prove to him that on such a such a date with the eyechart and your eye doctor (Surgeon is best, a basic walmart examiner is not adequate here0 and the necessary information that you are indeed blind and cannot continue in your livelihood driving a 18 wheeler. Cannot get a DOT Waiver etc.

Before you do this, examine the situation with the eye surgeon, it may still be possible to take out say a Cataract and install a fresh new lenses to get your sight back for example, but not depth of focus. You will be wearing bi or trifocols for that (Spend a dollar for no lines)

I have Amblyopia in my left eye,and carry a vision waiver with 20/20 in right eye.My left eye is 20/300.
To be eligible for the waiver you must have 20/40 or better in good eye,and 20/40 overall.

The FMCSA is where you seek a vision waiver, Go forth and get it. You might even apply online.

Did you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get the waiver?

Have to apply every two years.Eye exam and peripheral test.Medical card every year.
Pretty easy,as long as you do the application exactly the way they want it,or they send it back.
Mine expires in March, and I send in the application the November before,so plenty of time.
They are pretty helpful if you have questions.
