hi! I am a long time lurker on the forums but i had to create an account today to ask this question. What do you guys/girls think about driver facing cameras? I personally dont like it the idea of it. Especially the part about recording audio? I just turned down a job because of it. And the strange thing is, its a small family owned company. I thought only mega carriers did this? Is this going to be the new thing in the industry?

They also made me sign some papers acknowledging that i am being recorded and any unsafe driving will be deducted from my pay. For example they seem to run tight schedules, there will be times i will have to eat and drive. there will be times were ill have to read a txt message from dispatch. my seat belt needs to be on while loading and unloading in the dock. so ill have to stop the truck everytime to take a bathroom break and more scenarios that i cant think of right now that this driver facing camera seems to be designed to penalize a driver for his/her hard earned pay

Im just trying to figure out if i made the right choice about turning down that job. I like the idea of highway facing cameras, that seems like a great idea. but why record an OTR driver? would you guys/girls have done the same thing? or did i over think things?

Those cameras are forced on by insurance companies, they tell you they can not watch and record you anytime they want, they can. Biggest problem with them is they do not record constantly and you can not see what they are recording and what. They need a good bump to get them recording in a accident and only show what is in front. They are to put blame on drivers to protect companies from lawsuits. reason I am out now, I will not drive for one of those companies, if I want to go back driving I will have a very good quality cameras that can get the views of front, sides and have a card that can be pulled to show the officer when needed, also need it to keep recording while parked to catch the trickery that goes on in them truck stops.

I see driver facing cameras as perhaps an insurance savings.
But who would want that. Makes your daily grind, and deliveries impossible if your not a bot and have food requirements.
    Eff that.
I know Sysco food has driver cameras.

On the one hand, they can protect you, as a driver, from being falsely accused of being at fault in an accident. If you were diligently doing your job, the camera will prove that. On the other hand, to me, they are a huge invasion of privacy and I wouldn't want to work for a company that has them. As a female, I would be concerned about bad behavior by the employees who screen the vids that come in for violations.

    Unsafe driving deducted from pay.
No way buddy, we all have bad moments, but no you are not touching my pay over something that is argumentative. Even if it’s a cut & dry situation write me up suspend me or fire me, but don’t touch my money!

Seat belt while parked in a loading dock.
That is just plain nonsense. They gotta be off their rockers.

Have to stop to go the bathroom. Have you no class man? That is the most classless disgusting thing to relieve yourself while driving!!!!!

If 5 minutes creates that much of an issue, learn to tell your boss to F off. Seriously, you need to able to stop and pee. Heck you could loose more time than that stuck at red lights or a backed up scale house.

I make no apologies on this one. I have 0 respect for someone who will go the bathroom while driving

lol they should be called that. they pay drivers 20% of the load and want them to run north east load. I think they could afford a reasonable 25%. but you would have to work for them for 6 months to get that.Would i be considered "petty" if i name the company on a public forum?

i figured this was probably for an insurance discount. The thing is, they will not hire drivers with any moving violations or tickets. they want safe drivers. so insurance for safe drivers got to be cheap. But im thinking god forbids if your involved in an accident and the outside camera shows the other person at fault but the driver facing camera shows that you might have been reaching for your water at the same time might cause a discrepancy especially if they took a good defense lawyer. I dont know what that it could be, but it just sounds like a scenario in which insurance company wont cover the driver if he/she is injured despite at no fault.

I think Sysco drivers drive a day cab and go home every night. If i was getting paid hourly wage with health insurance and going home every night, then i dont really see an issue with driver facing camera. but an OTR driver that lives in the truck for weeks at a time? it just dont feel right.

I agree. there are alot of jackoffs out there. But one would think the highway camera is enough proof?

sorry to offend you. now i feel like crap because i dont have bladder of steel. Have you ever been stuck in traffic in the northeast? I hate northeast loads and perfer to run midwest. atleast i can stop and stretch my legs during a bathroom break.

Saw a sign in Sysco, along with no phones, no eating drinking while driving, No Daydreaming and no Radio Music.

My company JCT has just canceled their driver facing plans based on the vast majority of drivers threatening to quit, but also prospective drivers no committing to sign on due to the cameras.
