I do the numbers at 15000 insurance based on gross i made booking my own loads . I would make 400 more a week. I enjoy access to tire fuell toll discounts. No factoring cost no repairs to reefer unit. Thats why i lease my truck to small carriers. Ive owned 3 trucks all new . And house harleys new pu all paid for. Not having authority i can afford 4 months off every yr and still bank. Some want there own i just dont see the extra profit justifing the extra headache with it. 1 damage claim on a reefer can set you back thousands very quick

I agree been o/o longtime now never had my own authority. Just built a pole barn 2yrs ago big enough to park 4 bobtails and all my toys. Own rental poperties all under 70%. You can make a good living at 70% no doubt

$15,000 a year comes to $288 a week. How exactly you saved $400 a week by leasing to someone.
Any way. Nothing wrong with leasing to a company if you see value in that, but if you are going to book your own loads what’s the point?

The authority is just 1 part of it . Figure i dont factor. Save .30gal on fuel sometimes more. Discount on tolls tire discounts . Shop labor i pay less than 100hr. I negotiate my own rates. Some loads pay 2.50 some 4.75. Its works well and i dont have the headaches of getting paid. They collect the detention do all the paperwork . I run my own ins. And tags which is my decision . Tags they reimburse me $36 week. I use their elog at no cost. No trailer rental (savings of 1200month for reefer alone).Trust me all thats worth 30% IMO

No one has mentioned that new authorities have a tougher time getting loads from certain brokers. I cant speak from experience but I have read that here and it makes some sense.

Another major hurdle is the need for 3 months of operating expenses when you start. Unless you are factoring loads the money is not going to show up every Friday. If you factor loads I don't see why you would want to bother with your own authority.

In my opinion these are the two major hurdles for most drivers. I also believe that if we were all independents then this business would be one people would be fighting to get into.

Well that seems easy enough but now your losing the profit you had hoped to gain. What if the factoring company comes after you because a client didn't pay? I have heard nothing good about these companies and the scenario I just outlined could put you in the poorhouse. Having another business collecting your money and charging you to give you said money sounds like bad business.
