Hi All, I own a tri axle dump truck and have plenty of work during the Spring, Summer and Fall month but Winter is another story. Anyone have any suggestions for work in Pennsylvania during the winter months? My current ideas are to haul salt, snow (when weather permits) and trash (ash).
I am primarily interested in any suggestions above and beyond the above material and/or who I would reach out to when hauling these materials?
    Thanks in advance!

In some places you can get a winter plowing and sanding contract. A blade and spreader is a fairly significant cash out lay for a short season use item, but if the contract is right the money can be there. One of my gravel trucks plows and sands all winter, the other 2 just haul snow.

There should be a major salt source in Genesee NY upstate. Im not certain if it is still operational.

Baltimore has a pretty good source of salt brought in off ships and trains. There is a stockpile that is pretty good going out to the state DOT salt and sand type outposts for winter battle. You with a triaxle can run salt until you pass out, rest and run some more all winter.

Port of wilmington in delaware also has a huge pile of salt that is sent out all over the place cames in via Ship. Believe "port contractors" handles all the loads for that may call them and inquire about it. What part of Pa are you from?

I am out of the Reading area. Spring, Summer and Fall have offered quite a bit variety of materials but I have been fairly consistent. I definitely expected a slow winter but have been pounding the phone a bit to see if I can find something to keep my truck reasonably busy.
My understanding is that there are some ash hauling opportunities available but so far, a lot of dead ends.
No crossing state lines for me. Keeping things tight and reasonably local for now.

Good luck. Your in a bad area for a one truck operation in the winter with xpressway around the corner and menkins a stones throw past oley. They have the trucks to keep the rates low around here, and they have their hands in everything. Salt, snow, ash, stone, plowing....

You might have to dig deep if your going to make any money this winter.

Not saying its impossible either. Plenty of o/o triaxles still run all winter. The restriction to pa is going to hurt you greatly. A lot of dirty dirt comes from nyc going to morgantown's landfill. Its cheap but its consistent. Salt from DE all over NJ, to many of the turnpike salt sheds. Salt from DE to PA salt sheds.

Call the quarrys around here, maybe they need trucks to bring stone to all these new wharehouses going up. They lay floors in the winter and need dump trucks to haul in and haul out material. Berks products and ruan are 2 of the bigger concrete companies i can think of. See if they can use you......

Lastly, grain hauling.... plenty of mills and small farms around here. Most done by the farmer, but i still see company trucks going in and out a few mills.
