Off I-35, down 277 between Dilley and Eagle Pass is a major exotic ranch - Comanchee Ranch or something like that with a private airport. Big money hunts there. Last I remember Hwy 277 was well maintained and heavily patrolled by DPS and Border Patrol due to the border crossing at Piedras Negras.

Be interesting to see how Garmin routes it.

That would be a great run. I love running TX backroads. Their backroads are better than most states main roads! After you get to 57, youre only 98 miles from Eagle Pass. Its interstate til then. I dont know how Garmin would do it but Id take 40 to 440 to 30 to 635 to 20 to 35 to 57?

It get foggy as hell all the way from San Antonio and south in the early mornings. And theres a ton of deer if you can call those things deer. Skrawny little ######## . Biggest problems will be traffic on 35. Especially in Austin...its a nice ride during the day once your past san Antonio.

It’s easy to get in and out of. Be careful about truck route near town. No shortcuts
Plenty of truck stops from SA south on IH35 to the turn. Little past there. But be careful about the scales.
Yes, you’re in a different country. No, they don’t care about how it’s done elsewhere (true everywhere near Mexico). 1968 is a long time ago when things were “better”, but more primitive.
The border isn’t the river. It’s the check station inland. Past that to river is a Constitution-Free Zone. It’s still Texas, but it ain’t the USA.
Advantage here is that you don’t have to put up with the crap in the RGV, Laredo or El Paso.
That said, remember that Mexicans ALWAYS look for politeness. It’s disarming. And works wonders. Be the boy Mama tells everyone you are.
CLAYS RADIO SHOP in SA (across from Petro IH10 at Ackermann, E of Loop 410) is one of the nations best. Open M-F for service & installation (you won’t find better than Robert at installs). Website good, but the store has more. Highly recommended. Get your name on a worksheet at arrival. I’ve used them twenty years.
That Petro nearly always has parking. Always a good bet. The restaurant is good.
CLAYS is across the street from Petro entrance and a parking lot. I pay the motel $10 to stay there overnight to be first in line at 0800.
EMPIRE CHROME is across Interstate, and the Blue Beacon is almost as good as the one on McCarty Road in Houston.
Get a tollpass to run TX-130. You NEVER want to run IH35 thru Austin. Not even at 2AM. The Loves at Seguin a very good one (at south end of tollroad on IH10).
I’d leave IH10 at Loop 410 and run across the south side to pick up IH35.Last edited: Nov 1, 2018

IH40 to Little Rock
IH30 to Texarkana
IH49 to Shreveport
IH20 to Fort Worth (not south from Dallas, stay far left on 20 and keep going. Same for US67. Stay far left at TX-360. Also stay far left at Loop 820. Then move to RH lane past S-curve. Ignore the “fast lane” crap from the irresponsible drivers)
IH35W to TX130
TX130 to IH10
IH10 to Loop 410
Loop 410 to IH35
IH35 to TX57
Use San Antonio for first or final stops. Preferably not on IH35 (Laredo traffic).
