And I wouldn't go back to pulling a box on a regular basis unless I had to because I couldn't physically do the securement...

Anyone that can steam up 1/2 a mirror can pull a box, it takes a real driver to do open deck or specialized.

Now SSB, don’t you really mean, “it takes a special driver”? I’m sure there are drivers out here that have the same skill set or better that are pulling a box. J/S But, I’m surely not one of them.

I'm sure that I could, but I am not interested. I have young kids, and I don't want to be out for weeks at a time running OTR it specials right now. Local-ish runs getting me home for the weekends is exactly what I'm looking for. We'll see what a few years from now brings when my kids are older and don't give a fig about me.

As a p&d guy, I wish I could be lazy lol. They weren't joking when they said this was a whole different ball game, jeesh!

Nah, just saying that lazy drivers don't last long in open deck or specialized...and I will add P&D drivers for LTL to that list too.

So you've driven open deck and/or specialized?

Flat/step and specialized takes more situational awareness and caution. You can turn a van/reefer in circles without issue...if you try to do the same in an open deck, you get

    flatbed2.jpg

    Or

    flatbed3.jpg

Don't watch traffic and have to panic stop, or some idiot cuts you off and you get

    ouch.jpg

    Or

    coil.jpg

This is what a careless van driver see's

    van1.jpg

He/she just has to watch when they open the door unless there is a crash.
