AM-FM Radio was once great.

Before the Congress was bought off to allow other than single ownership. This was the reason for licensing. The 1934 FCC Act. The owners had to prove community support. No more domination by a few. Extended to television a little later. Anyone understand why CNN license to broadcast isn’t revoked? Or your local radio or TV affiliates?

Opera to the prairie. The Great European masterpieces. Regional sounds. Blues, bluegrass. Western Swing.

Recording companies suddenly had a national audience. Glenn Miller’s Glen Island Casino 1938 nationwide broadcasts were seminal.

Audiences could hear that which they themselves couldn’t play. Or maybe had never heard. (A piano was the most desired home possession from the Civil War until 1945).

The latest Broadway tune had long legs. The show might have been in 1937. Artie Shaw produced a swinging dance number from it in 1940. Other artists recorded it. You knew the lyrics. As did all your family. It was re-recorded with a driving Nelson Riddle arrangement in 1958 for Frank Sinatra. A hit out of the park.

Like an old convertible with a new paint job. Everyone liked it all over again. Take a ride.

Ben Webster in 1957, and John Coltrane in 1961 gave it a go. Jazz meanderings, but still the lyricism shone.

Orchestral music (our instruments) has reached highs in the 19th Century. And we were headed that way again circa 1962. Something new.

That’s culture. It ain’t food.

Radio drama: the appetizer for the mind. Where imagination held sway. Not cheesy sets and costumes as on TV (Any Star Trek version; etc). Those shows can be found on a number of sites. Whether it’s Orson Welles in, “The Shadow”, or “The Life of Riley”, there was something for all.

The radio news networks were the backdoor. Founded by Americans, but ruthlessly bought out by those with other allegiances. Slowly then all of a sudden, the FCC didn’t matter at all.

Sorry, Hand. It’s all become geared to real dumb #####. Slice & dice categories of syncopated noise. Eliminate the past. Eliminate talent & standards. Plug it in = not music. Music is the beat of the heart, the control of breathing. Electricity isn’t even our frequency.

Th rural towns had local ag or stock-raising news. The turkey shoot. An on-air garage sale. Sunday morning services (“Hymns We Love”, host Norvell Slater, was a Texas favorite). You heard artists not known elsewhere. That was as much about travel as the local newspapers were.

And clear channel radio where certain AM stations didn’t turn down their transmitters at dusk. WLS-Chicago. WBAP-Fort Worth. KOA-Denver.

Ever use a radio with both a coarse and fine tune function? With an antenna that could be adjusted? Where, on some roads, you’d speed up headed west, to get back going north again to keep that fading signal? (Three feet of snow and school was uphill both ways)

XM/Sirius is okay. I have it. But expect that unnatural divisions exist. That’s done with purpose. All the depth of a teaspoon as to programming. Also on purpose. Still, better than what radio turned into. It’s a start.

I use YouTube to te-familiarize myself or send a selection of three to five American Songbook classics to my son to familiarize himself with. How different artists interpreted great works. Same song, five versions. Never tiring played back to back is the amazing part.

Find something that satisfies.

Volume down low because most of it is not something you want to listen to on the CB.

It is more of a cherished memento of a bygone era.

Channel 3 is useful for bridge tenders when it is necessary for them to understand a problem.

Radio is also a liability when you have prostitution, drug dealing and who knows what else is out there.

I am a radio nut, have been since a kid. I remember "good" AM radio but it is all now kooks and entertainment, not news.

I use TuneIn app to listen to old time radio shows in the evenings and I listen to International news (BBC and others) in order to avoid the very stupid and hyperbolic American cable news (some worse than others).

But I still have my Drake SW8 to try for pirates (Ever heard of KIPM?) and my SSB CB to practice the love.

Check in at 7PM Saturday nights local in the greater Seattle area on 40LSB. We have a nice net of 50+ great people!

 

Get xm. Problem solved. Nobody runs cb’s here much anymore. Most guys are vhf.

 

Do you have unlimited data? I play my iHeartRadio almost exclusively.
