chain pay?

No, not if you trust your drivers. And if you can't trust a driver why have him in the first place?

 

If they’re not paying them enough that they need to pay chain pay then I could see it being abused to bump up their pay.

 

Maybe the company that pays the chain money sees it as kind of a bonus, an attaboy. Maybe it's just a way of rewarding a driver who puts out a little special effort over and above what the job calls for.

You're kidding right? I watched guys MILK it for all it was worth at the teamster shop I ran out of.

Guys would get off, then get back on the highway for 20 miles on 20 different ramps.

Since I know I'll be chaining at least 5 times in the next 4 days, I asked my boss for chain pay. She said sure, she'll deduct it from my annual bonus. I explained she had it backwards, she said no, she had it correct, she'll give me chain pay on my next paycheck, and then deduct it from my annual bonus.

 

We figured the biggest slug collected approximately $5K a year in purposely wasted time.

That's grand theft most places I know.

Nope, not kidding at all. If drivers are milking it...and Teamster drivers have a bad reputation in that regard...it'll show up pretty fast. Especially with ELDs.
We're not union and we're a small company. It's easy to keep track.
Like I said, our guys get paid by the hour so they automatically get paid to chain too.
We used to pay percentage with a little extra to chain and to tarp. I don't see any difference in the trip times between now and then.

 

Guys are all hourly. ELD doesn’t have anything to do with it. They've invented ways to milk that I'd never even imagine.

Try out one our trucks? You'd have to wait for somebody to die or retire. One of our competitors is looking for a couple of drivers. Actually he's almost always looking for a couple of drivers. He has a road building job in the woods and I heard the trucks are chaining three times a day. He pays percentage. No chain pay.
