Is there a reason that unloading at grocery warehouses with reefers, or just with reefers in general takes so long, leading to detention?
Why does unloading with reefers take so long?

From my experience as a dry van driver, it has nothing to do with the type of trailer you are hauling. It has more to do with the kind of customer you are delivering to.
For example, I rarely go to a grocery distributor, especially for a live unload. However, this past week I had a live unload at one that took 9 hours to off-load the product. When you walked onto the docks, you got an idea of the problem.... not enough dock space and the product in my trailer was on the floor, not pallets. Since it was a floor load, it was naturally going to take longer, but there was so much product on the docks that hadn't been put up yet, that was creating an issue just getting the product off of my trailer when the lumpers finally got it onto the pallets.Jarhed1964, Blue jeans, slow.rider and 3 others Thank this. -
Wonder how Costco does it. They must have an army of highly effective workers in there.

Costco is awesome, but I've never taken food there.
Wait until you go to H.E.B., Sysco, or Kroger. May God have mercy on your soul.Jarhed1964, Stonehjl, Blue jeans and 17 others Thank this. -
It's primarily a grocery warehouse thing, not a reefer thing. But reefer adds another quality control delay in many cases. But any load where there's perhaps 5 different products on 1 pallet X 25 pallets, this all has to be unloaded, then segregated, then checked for damaged cases, then counted, then signed off on by receiving clerk. This happens with most all dry loads AND temp control loads to a grocer.

There's a secondary Kroger warehouse here in Phoenix called Payton's. They charge like $800 to unload a trailer lol. You'll be there a solid 4 hours to boot. That's with a van.

None of those can hold a candle to Loblaws at Cambridge Ontario.
12 hours is fast. 16-20 is average. Last time (2014?) I was detained for 23:45.Jarhed1964, Blue jeans, Trucker Paul and 8 others Thank this. -
You'd best be close to ontime, not late and not too early, either.Blue jeans, Coffey, 32N110W and 5 others Thank this.
