Hello! I've got a...situation....in which I'm looking for some direction. Here's the rundown: in 2017, I had been driving for 2 years and I got a Physical Control (not even considered a moving violation and gives no points on your license.....basically "having control" of a vehicle while being intoxicated) here in Ohio because I didn't want to drive drunk and decided to sleep in the back seat of my pickup truck. Well, I guess Ohio doesn't think that's such a good idea and I got charged with a crime. I went to court and the best my lawyer could do for me was a 1 year CDL suspension (not domestic drivers license, just the CDL endorsement) and a fine. So, for 1 year I took a job as an HVAC tech and have been doing that ever since. Well, needless to say, I'm not satisfied with this job and I'd like to get back into trucking.

So, I have to go back and retest (both written and driving.....THANK YOU Ohio laws) to get my CDL back. I'm not worried about reading up to pass the written/equipment check tests but due to the amount of time that has passed, I'm not sure how well my maneuvering is gonna be. I'd like to get a bit of practice before going to the test site but I don't know anybody with a truck that I can borrow. Do you guys know of any way I can brush up on my skills before jumping back into the seat? I don't wanna pay for a full training course (but perhaps a 1 or 3 day?) or go with a Mega-trainer and be on contract for a year, but I would be willing to pony up a reasonable amount of cash.

    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

i think in all seriousness, you should check with any and ALL CDL schools in your area, and pay the same amount of money (or a bit more) and go thru a bonafide refresher course, and obtain a "certificate" that you went thru one.

THAT may help you find work more easily than :"joe-blow trucker, lending you his truck.

some companies may only accept that "certificate", and you stand a chance of blowing a good job opportunity in the process.

also, you do not mention going thru a SAP program, did you?

some companies may demand you did, before they even read beyond the first line of you application.

Nothing wrong with drinking a few beers. I did the right thing and chose not to drive while intoxicated. I guess Ohio lawmakers don't see it that way....but hey, you live and learn.

you said, "having control"......was the engine running, while you slept in the back of the truck?

many states do have "some sort" of OWI on the books, (operating while intoxicated)

No. The keys were in the ignition while I was sleeping in the back. A Physical Control is not, in any legal definition, considered a DUI/OWI. It presents no points on a driving license and is not a moving violation. As far as most insurance companies are concerned, I currently have a clean MVR because I have no points on my license. My car insurance did not increase due to this situation.

i think it was (as you know) the keys in that ignition that got you nailed.

too bad you went/are going thru that crap.

i thought Ohio was one of the "few states" that you could fill out a form to put your CDL on hold? or was that only for if like you (retire) and want to hold onto it without renewing your DOT med card.?????

Yeah, it was definitely the keys in the ignition that got me in trouble. Like I said, my intentions were good but hey, the state ain't gonna fund itself.

As for putting a CDL on hold, I cannot say for sure as I've never looked into that route. My main concern now is getting my CDL endorsement back.

yeah, you lost yours, i know.....i was just wondering if Ohio was on of those states, you can put a hold on it, cuz one wants to keep it, but not get the medical.

yeah, i agree, you thought to sleep it off....

but all states are looking for cash grabs..
