The backup camera situation?

My 389 has the smart nav system and there is a screen in there for camera's, so I'm guessing the wires are ran some place just have to buy the cameras and install them. But I think I'll just stick to mirrors and getting out to actually see what's around me.

 

If not already, I bet it would not be long.

I know you can program them to fly a certain predetermined flight pattern then return and can be trained to “follow me” wherever I go.... so either flying back to a starting point or to a homing beacon should not be too hard with the right brains behind it... (not mine, I’m just the idea guy... lol)

I’m now envisioning having it follow my Truck through the mountains or over the George Washington Bridge... what beautiful scenes could we be documenting as we drive. (Well, one battery charge at a time... lol)

 

Please don’t take this as preachy... I’m not and I only have a couple years of Tractor/Trailer driving under my belt, so this isn’t a “listen to me sonny”... but that will smooth out... a lot... you drive, and back, that truck as you need to... you take the time and space to do it safely too... don’t get in a rush... don’t let anyone rush you... don’t let anyone tell you how to do it, unless they are hoping out of their truck or off their dock to actually HELP YOU...

When you rush, or let others rush you, that’s when mistakes happen... you be in control of your truck...

And no, I’m NOT an expert backer at all... but I’ve gotten better, actually much better, after I stopped caring what others thought or said... all that matters is that I safely backed my truck...

I know you were kidding but Thank You... I really was curious what the stats were... and of course “one is too many”... but that is then balanced with the cold cost/benefit analysis to see what if anything can be done.

 

Either a Nav System or I was thinking about how one can get a Volvo with an Apple CarPlay Screen (or Android Auto) and just connecting the drone to my iPhone/iPad (or Android device) and send the video to the CarPlay screen... then one could sell it on the Car Market too.

 

That may work in a lab, but not on the road. Hell, they can't even get trailer tails to deploy as designed when speeds top 30-35 mph (as evidenced by the number of them you see going down the road with only 1 opened up). With the rain, snow, road grime, and salt that accumulates on these trailers going down the road, you'd be lucky if the solenoid continued operating past 6 months. Tiny, intricate moving parts are not going to have the same longevity on the rear of a CMV that travels 120K miles per year as it does on a passenger car that won't see that many miles in 15 years. Couple that with the complete disregard many company drivers and yard jockeys have for trailers they don't own and don't plan to stay hooked to for very long, and the expected lifespan of those cameras and solenoids gets even shorter. Hell, how often do you see marker lights out going down the road or flat tires in a drop lot? It would be a huge waste of money and resources to install. Remember, it isn't JUST the cost of the cameras, but the hourly wage of the guy installing them and maintaining them, and the OTHER work that's stacking up because he's fiddledicking around with those cameras.

 

But would he know how to operate the antigravity system??? That’s the real question...

And if you go further back it time... would that Teamster (not the union guy, the real ones with the team of horses, know how to use those mirrors to back up his team to the dock???

 

You haven't thought it through far enough, take a look at most of the truck drivers you see, how many of them do you think are going to get out and look if they've got a camera that they think shows them everything? Tech is nothing but a headache, I wish I'd never got a smartphone and just stuck with a flip phone. All the extra computer crap on the new trucks is nothing but a headache, take a look at the mechanic forum here and read about people trying to find the source of their electrical issues. More tech on trucks is not constructive, ever.
