question: would placing a thin piece of vinyl between the magnet and roof (to protect the paint) affect performance? if so, what would you suggest instead of vinyl? i have a 50 watt cobra 29 i want to temporarily use on my car, but i don’t want to risk damaging the paint. thanks in advance.

They make pads specific for this - I do not remember where I got the last group of them, but they were like $2.

I agree. It has the best ears of any antenna I’ve ever ran, fiberglass or metal. Sometimes I can hear as good or better as beam antennas I am near. And I thought my 10k had good receive. It’s been $26 well spent.

If your ever in Wisconsin Konnection Electronics in Waukesha, WI 262-896-2003 (Larry) owner. I bought my General Lee from him, and he repaired my Superstar 158EDX and does quality work. Both work awesome.

Yes it will. If performance isn't your concern then stick something in between to protect the paint but don't expect any performance in the process.
It's much simpler to drill a hole and safer for the paint.

    Why?

My old man drove cars FAR more valuable than a kiddie race car. Every one had a hole drilled for the MOTOROLA radiotelephone antenna. As well as holes for the trunk-mounted unit AND holes drilled on either a console or trans tunnel for the head unit.

Guess you’ll never own a car with OEM GPS, SIRIUS/XM or ONSTAR roof antenna, huh?

The right tools and supplies. Just like any other job.

    Magmounts ain’t your friend.
