The law here was modified to include every thing including garbage trucks and it already has caused accidents.

The state police and the media around here blitz the air ways about this change, they misrepresented it, saying you will be ticketed if you don't get over and people don't read about it just hear move over or else.

Even when there is no where to go, they get over, cutting people off.

The other morning I am driving on I 96 coming out of Detroit, and in the left far lane, a cop is on a combo on/off ramp with a disable car, these idiots almost hit each other trying to get over, they slowed down to 40 mph and there were two sets of accidents because of it.

Illinois also expanded this law a year or two ago to include ANY vehicle stopped on the shoulder with the 4-ways on.

It's sad when you have to mandate by law what ought to be common sense & common courtesy...but then again these days, neither is all that common. The law just gives cops the ability to metaphorically slap you upside the head if you've got your head up your rear by issuing a citation.

I posted on this B4; Let's all look at this from my perspective.
I'm the poor schmuck trying to tow your wife, girlfriend, or daughter off the Interstate,
where 80 MPH speeds right next to me are not uncommon.
I have to bend down and put a hook under the A arm on the driver side - next to the oncoming traffic.
(I do wait for a break in traffic - and I be quick about it.)
I had a cone out next to my Freightliner Rollback bed, and a Trucker flattened it.
I always put two flares way upstream so I'm seen early.
I really do want to go home in one piece at the end of the day.
Moving over is a 1 minute inconvenience; I'm used to hearing Jake brakes half a mile away
from any of the alert, professional drivers that scan ahead for situational awareness.
Stellar Drivers flip their four ways on - to slow the herd.
So, yeah, some morons will be morons. Can't fix stupid.
You gotta admit moving over is better than filling out the accident report for Vehicular Manslaughter.

  8. I've gotten so disgusted myself so what I do because these so-called CSA Wonder Boys keeping a driver shortage away are getting to be just as bad as cars with their limited to minimal training and they seem to think it's their own chance to pass to I lock down both Lanes.. I put myself right on top of the middle David lights so therefore if you want to try to pass me you can drive on the shoulder and you better hope it's not a crown shoulder and you rollover are you better hope it's not a slippery shoulder and is slide off into the ditch because that's how I do it now if the law and the state simply says move over or slow down, sometimes you get into heavy traffic and you can't move over your going to have a problem I have no problem at all slowing down if there's a cop giving somebody a ticket or somebody sitting on the side of the road and it's a 65 I'll slow down to 40 roll right on by in the right lane speed back up again but that being said the reason I lock down the lane is you have no choice but to slow down you want to take a chance and come around me on the right and hit the object for it I don't give a ####...I'm about to start my 29th year out here and I can tell you right now what I've seen in the last 10 years I don't even recognize the industry from 5 years ago..but as far as the move over slow down law it also depends on your upbringing if you come from a place where it's called courtesy you were brought what's manners and properly you learn what courtesy is some people don't know what courtesy is because they didn't come from that kind of a household they came from the streets are they came from basically near do well families and they were never taught the right from wrong. summer just ignorant and like to show their stupidity. but as far as what to do do you like I do I don't care you can get mad all you want the law says move over or slow down if you don't want to that's a reason why when I try to move over I watch that right lane to see who's going to try to fly around and the number of trucks that do it disgust me more and more..but like I said that being said lockdown both lanes pop your truck right in the middle straddling it like a drunk LOL and then move over and just be ready to probably get flipped off numerous times it'll happen but okay go get over it maybe one day they'll learn what move over or slow down means I move over it doesn't mean you put your ### and try to come around me on the right not going to happen...

We have the same law in Arkansas, passed within last couple of years. People have been killed on the side of our roads pretty often.

10 Commandments to start things off right, 50,000 (Laws) shalt nots screw it all up.

I understood the OP to be saying the move over laws recognize you may not be able to move over so they also accept slow down as an alternative. Not that there is no need to move over just because emergency vehicles are on the side of the road. After crossing through Atlanta and Chattanooga I think 6 times this week it's very easy to have so much traffic on the roads it's not possible to move over.

TN laws permits slowly driving in the right lane if it's not possible to change lanes. Believe it or not, some 4-wheelers do not volunteer to get behind a truck. And I mean they will not, NO MATTER WHAT, allow themself to be behind a truck. They'll happily accept a big fat insurance settlement check, from your insurance carrier over allowing a truck to change lanes. I do everything I possibly can to change lanes, but I cannot ALWAYS change lanes, so I drive about a walking speed if necessary.
