Loading - How do you like it?

    Hello, I work for LSC Communications which is a book publisher. Im a forklift operator, 90% of my day is spent in and out of trailers loading pallets. My question is how do you drivers like your trailers to loaded? My pallet count is always different but is usually between 14 to 30 but sometimes as high as 40. The product is 100% books so most are heavy. My boss just says load doubled against the sides touching opposite side every other layer but I feel this isnt the best way especially on smaller pallet counts. Also does it make a difference in short haul and long haul? Any advice from you guys would be greatly appreciated and would be.very helpful keeping you guys happy.

    Are the pallets always the same weight? Or are we talking 14 pallets may weigh 42000 and also 30 or 40 pallets may weigh 42000?

    If they are standard sized pallets, load everything touching the right wall. The crown of the road and vibrations will make any loose cartons shift to the right, but being against the wall they can’t go anywhere.
    Some will claim this will cause the truck to lean right increasing the risk of a roll over. 4-6” ain’t going to make that much of a difference. It’s their driving style that makes it a problem.

    Load about 900 lbs per foot of trailer this is a ballpark number and just a rule of thumb ,, usually two left them two right, last two ends up on the right ,let common sense prevail,! Best of luck to you in all your adventures

    There are way too many variables to give you a one size fits all answer. The biggest thing is weight distribution. The load needs to be loaded as evenly as possible as well as secured from shifting. This link describes different methods and reasons why though there is more to it than even what it describes.

    Are these regular 40x48 pallets ? Obviously not all weigh the same since you mention anywhere from 14-40 pallets. Generally, are these loads grossing max weight ? Are you privy to the driver's gross weight on a scale ? Do you get driver's returning asking for a re-work of the load because of being overweight on gross or a set of tandems ?

    Depends on the weather, if it is snowing I prefer to get as close to 34,000 on the drives for traction otherwise I like it balanced.

    You can stack em in one pile as long I am legal on axles. The books will just have to take care of themselves.

    If it's a problem getting weight legal I'll be back.
