    Hey gang,
1st time poster. I bought a uniden 980 and have been trying to tune it since 1:30pm... it is now 9:00pm.... according to the readings I'm getting, my antenna is too short. BUT, It is full factory length. I'm using a sirio performer 5000 magmount system. The lowest swr readings i get are ch.1 - 2.07 ch.40 - 1.6. According to the person that worked on my radio, I should be getting "ch.1 - 1.4. Ch.40 - 1.28" BUT "no more than 1.7" ANY help would be GREATLY Appreciated.
    Thanks

Are you using an external SWR meter or one built into the radio? An external is better.

What vehicle is the antenna mounted on, and where it is mounted on that vehicle?

IOW, give us some more details.

Ok here goes. I took my '05 Tundra pickup to a cb shop and the installer put the antenna on the top center of the cabin. He ran some kind of meter/analyzer (swr?) through the antenna alone and said it was a perfect match all the way across. I used the internal swr meter to check it once I left the shop because i was told that if it was higher than the specified numbers (see 1st post) the warranty of 30 days would not cover it. The person that worked on my radio had the internal swr as mentioned in my 1st post. I cant even come close to that. I must also mention that the shop i had the work done at was close to closing time.... so i kind of feel like the work might have been rushed to leave on time.

So if Im reading this right, the swr was set by cb shop and was good but now you are checking it with the built in meter on the 980 and it is not good. Perform the radio diagnostics and see if it reads pass for antenna and if it does operating the radio would be safe, and purchase a good swr/power meter and check it with that, it will be alot more accurate than radios meter.

What does the 30 day warrenty cover, the cost of installation? There is no reason for swr to change once you left cb shop, unless you hit a tree branch and bent whip, not sure why you were instructed to recheck swr once you got home.

Gonna be some difference between radio and analyzer....Hope he checked a lil more than just swr....
Analyzer transmits @ about 1/4 watt..
Radio like his turned down will be a bit more, nothin to worry about unless radi meter is way off or somethins up with ant..

Yes, you are correct. When i checked the swr with the built in, it read 3.8 on Ch. 1 and 3.6 on Ch. 40.

The 30 days cover the radio and the work done to it.

I dont know if thats all he checked. Thats all i was told. And like i said before, he seemed (to me) kinda in a hurry because it was almost closing time.
So here is a question. I hope i can explain it right. Ok the swr readings tell me that the antenna is too long even thought the antenna is full length, BUT is it possible to trim it down till it comes back to a lower swr reading?

Yeap..Trim 1/4" at a time though..Bottom ot out b4 you cut and leave it cut enuf so that it still bottoms out when finished..Better to have to much than not enuf...
BUT until you have a meter to test with dont do anything..Guess work doesnt work..
Tools ill suggest are an ohm meter and a analyzer at some point....
Analyzer will show you whats doin and more without useing radio and possibly hurting it....Im not sayin to go out and spend big $ now but as soon as your ## $ allows...A multi meter is not expensive so grab one and keep it with you..
Study up on stuff should be in your immediate future......Keep in mind to,just as you think you understand it some...Someone will tell you something and totally frig ya up....lol i swear i have been told stuff and its almost like startin all over..

Lol. Thank You for the info! I have an ohm meter. What should i measure? I can borrow an swr meter. Can or will the external swr meter be THAT different from the internal? Something that doesnt make sense to me is, why would a radio company install a meter in it only to NOT be accurate?... is there a recommended analyzer? Maybe not too $$$?
