Friday March 13 to Monday March 31.

But, I did that first trip on friday and got hung out at Love's until Monday. Wasn't a great start. The next week I only worked from Monday to Wednesday!

This is why I'm optimistic about that best week, I'm hoping the norm is closer to there than the whole put together.

I really appreciate your post PP, as I am considering doing exactly what you have done. It's good to see that it is at least possible.

May have already been posted (this thread has been going for a while) but I have a couple of questions -

    1) How are you getting your loads? Are you working with a broker(s), or getting them from the boards? If you are getting them from a broker, how did you find them?

    2) Why did you choose the bottom dump over an end dump? (I thought I saw somewhere there are more loads available for end dumps.)

One more off topic (to everyone), Prior to following this thread I was leaning more towards a reefer, the thinking being that regardless of the economy - people have to eat; that and it can be used as a regular trailer thus giving more options. What are ya'alls thoughts on that?

    Thanks again!

It's around $8100 for the year. It was about $2300 down and 9 payments for the balance. I made one payment at $560 but it goes up to $707 this month after I added the trailer a month into the policy.

I have a dedicated broker at eclipsetrans. My truck dealer had used them and recommended them which is how I found out. I picked hopper over end dump for safety and easier to learn reasons, basically I was talked out of end dump.

Hoppers and ends vs. Dry, Reefer, and Flat is sort of like the tortoise and the hare. If you look at all the companies on this site, good, bad, whatever, NONE of them have a 2000 truck hopper division blowing the bottom out of the market. So this is the tortoise, right now its winning because the hare has so much going on during the economic downturn, but the flip side is that hoppers and dumps will probably never make 3 dollars a mile (OTR) even when things are great. I'm getting some insulation from the downturn this way.

Thanks PP, You're an inspiration to me and i'm sure a few others. I can't thank you enough. After reading so many post in this forum, I was beginning to have my doubts about some of these trucking companies. A lot of them seem to be a rip off. I have a great paying job right now, but I'm at a dead end. Anyway, I figured my best option would be to work for myself. Ever since BJ and the Bear (Telling my age) I was interested in trucking. I have quite a few friends that does it and they love the freedom. Anyway, without rambling on to much. This summer, i'm going for it. You know what they say, no balls, no blue chips...

Thanks for the quick reply. With the type of work you are doing, is there much in the way of coast to coast loads, or pretty much regional?

Even though I've been running the SE the last couple of weeks, it's not really set up to be regional, though you can certainly request a smaller area. I don't think they do CA or extreme West coast, but I've seen loads from New Mexico to FL posted. I'm running Minnesota to Miami early next week. Supposed to be a 3k+ load.

Sounds good - not really looking for regional. One (maybe two) last questions (for now:biggrin_25525:).

I'm following your spreadsheet, but have no idea what the last column is (PPT?). Looks like some kind of 'net', but can't figure it out.

Do any of your figures include the cost of repairs to date?

    Thanks again!

The last column is Pay To Truck per Mile. It is the amount per mile that I actually received AFTER the broker takes his cut and the deadhead miles are added to the trip miles. It is before fuel though.

None of my figures include repairs. If I do that I haven't made anything yet. In fact with everything I have on cards from the startup expenses it is unlikely I will show a profit on paper this first year... we'll see.

I'll do a post here shortly of what I paid so far. I keep putting it off!
