Query about starting a Trucking career!

Well, just for the license end all you need to do is get the Class A book at the local DMV or DST and study it until your brains fall out. There are quizzes on-line somewhere where you can drill yourself before taking it to make sure you pass. Then all you have to do is march in take the test and pay 15 to upgrade to a class A. The Class A is mandatory if you want to be mentored by anyone or be behind the wheel while being coached on what to do.

For grants just contact any college. They have people with long lists that can help you find what you are looking for.

Starting out with CDL mills and company programs is a chance. Many people get stuck with a bill because of getting tired of waiting for a truck after completing full training right now (this is due to the economic crisis and low demand for drivers) and many wind up with an accident that gets them out of the game too early to recover the costs. If you want to go this route make sure you are willing to endure anything to get that goal post and be extremely careful so you retain your contract with whoever you sign on with until it is paid in full.

Mentoring with an experienced trucker is a great idea. Just be aware that with this economy many are struggling ready to go company or just can't bring on a new driver at this time. Don't give up if you go this route though. Sometimes it takes a million nos to get that one yes that launches you in the direction you want to go.

As far as just getting your class C and then upgrading to a class A I can't help you there. Not sure about that info. Inquire with your local licensing dept.

 

I went to California Emergency Foodlink and only paid for the drug test and license fees. Less than $200. It doesn't mater how long you've had your class c as long as you have it. I had mine less than 6 months. Foodlink is 40 hours a week for 18 weeks. 6 weeks in the classroom to get your permit then 6 weeks learning your skills and whatnot then 6 weeks running with thier company drivers throughout the state with 28' and 48' reefers setting up food givaways at food banks and such. It is a much better school than western or any other 4 week, 5 grand school and you'll be a much better driver right out the gate and have much less trouble finding a job in comparison. They are over in the old army depot in south sac.
