It seems that once the headgasket is blown it will errode into the block. The mls doesnt have enough sealing surface to compensate for a weathered deck and it pours all the coolant out the side of the head. I would be interested in trying a differnent design on a damaged block to see if it could be saved

    Interesting thread.
I saw some very negative comments on Cummins engines as well, so that leaves no proper engine at all. Perhaps Fred Flinstone propulsion?

There were some contributors who mentioned engine oil. I saw a YouTube clip about a couple of guys fixing an MX engine. At the end they filled the engine with engine oil, but very common mineral engine oil. These engines need high quality full synthetic motor oil. Normal mineral oil may get too hot, burn, and create soot, clogging up the oil lines in the engine.

    Is it a brand?

I have seen a few, not many, and I don't know the exact cause. Only saw the aftermath.
I think I posted a picture here several months ago. I was supposed to update you guys once I knew the root cause.
But although I was back at this same workshop several times it slipped my mind, and never asked about the cause. Sorry.

I heard that DAF are recalling trucks with MX13 engines to replace crankshafts as a precaution after they suffered several breakages.
Engines produced in 2017. At least 1000 engines are suspect.

Also some problems with MX11 head gaskets because of liners sinking into the block at about 600-700 thousand kilometers.
Apparently DAF have liners with oversize flanges, but they strongly advise against doing counterbores and tell dealer to install new long block. Customer less than happy of course.

Multi Layer Steel. Uses small beads of silicone and coatings to seal coolant and oil passages. Surface finish is critical for sealing. Supposed to better sealing when head lifts because use spring steel. Not as in frame friendly because they tend to erode deck.

But i have allways run mineral oil, both on my '06 and my '15.

And my friend with his '06 ......mineral oil.
    No spun bearings,......nothing.
The lifters on the camshaft were replaced at 900 000km 600 000miles.
    This was preventive.
And that i would advice all with a MX 13 to do around 20 000hours mark.
    It is a cheap repair.

Yeah I don't know what he's talking about either. As far as I'm concerned as long as the oil meets Paccar's recommendations it shouldn't matter if its conventional, synthetic or synthetic blend.

    Multi Layer Steel.
I can run to my shop and make a picture, but Google is faster....
    upload_2019-4-24_21-23-40.png

First experiences I had with them (in my race cars) were not too good.
Conventional gaskets failed as well, but it was a slow process, and fire rings just crept away from the bores.
On the MLS it went very fast. Not much fun after having them custom made for my engine.

Much less tolerant for imperfections in deck and head surface.
After resurfacing the heads and blocks with much finer grid they seem to hold (so far....)
