I am flying out this weekend to begin training with a flatbed company, the usual one week orientation 3 weeks out. Im new 0 experience, no restrictions I already have the cdl. This company states most of their trucks are auto very few manual. Im in a bit of a pickle right now I dont know what to do, does prime offer manual or will all companies be the same? Prime sells you the tarps and straps I believe which is why I didnt go with them.

What is with you guys and automatics?

Your starting out, get into a truck and get road time.

Autos are definitely the future for MEGAS. They already are, have beenfor years. Smaller fleets are definitely going that route as well. But, what’s YOUR future goal? Do you want to take that flatbed experience and make more money by going heavy haul? Good luck. Hey, what’s an 18 speed??? I’m with @Ridgeline on this one.

I worked at USX for just shy of 5 years after i got my cdl. I had no issues climbing back into a truck with a stick shift. It’s all in your head.

It’s all your head bud. Driving stick is like riding a bike or having sex, once you do it you’ll never forget it. Lol

Do what you were taught in school, shift by the tach. 500rpm shifts. Upshifts out at 1500 in at 1000, down shifts out at 1000 in at 1500. It’s not rocket science out here.

They are horrible backing up. They hop. They lurch. They get hot if you take too long.

If you honestly think manuals are old tech why are you worried about driving an auto closing doors in the future?

The best driving experience I've had is driving with automatic transmission. That was pulling hazmat tankers coast to coast. At the end of each driving day, wasn't nearly as tired as with a stick shift.

I experienced that, but not with a Volvo truck with Volvo automatic transmission
